How the left-wing turned the Jew from hero to villain

How can a self-proclaimed anti-racist and life-long supporter of the underdog find himself encouraging rampant anti-Semitism within his own Party, to the point that it is now splintering apart? Worse, how can he be found guilty of the same behaviour?

Jeremy Corbyn’s anti-Semitism problem is poorly understood by most, but it is key to explaining Labour’s current crisis. To understand it properly, we have to go back in time.¹

The Early Years

19^th Century socialism, trade unionism and the Methodist revivals combined to give the British Labour movement quite a different flavour to the revolutionary socialism of continental Europe. Christian Socialists such as Keir Hardie dominated the Labour Party’s leadership in its infancy at the turn of the 20^th Century, promoting the interests of the working class.

Indeed, it was Labour Party principles that undergirded the development of the British welfare state, with Labour campaigns for better working conditions and social reforms such as free education, free medical treatment and aid for society’s most vulnerable. Whatever the rights and wrongs of these policies from a biblical perspective, Labour was marked undeniably in its early years by biblically-inspired concerns: justice for the oppressed, compassion for the vulnerable, mercy and grace for those in need.

In this spirit, Labour gladly took up the Zionist baton from Lloyd George’s Liberals. The romantic idealism of the Zionist dream chimed strongly with classic Labour ideals: a down-trodden, persecuted people uniting in common cause of collaborative self-determination, pursuing lives of hard manual labour and bearing one another up through a populist culture of co-operation, shared ownership and mutual benefit, manifested most obviously in the kibbutz system.

Labour leader Arthur Henderson published his own version of the Balfour Declaration three months before the real thing was published under Lloyd George in 1917. Labour endorsed Zionism through the 1920s, 30s and 40s, opposing the Conservative Government’s White Paper limiting Jewish re-immigration and re-iterating strong support for Jewish settlers during and after the war years. Despite some back-tracking from Clement Attlee’s administration, this general support for Zionism continued well into the 1950s and was extended beyond this by philo-Semitic Labour PM Harold Wilson.

Promises of Freedom

It was during the 1960s, however, that the broader political context began to change dramatically, as a new age of rebellion and revolution swept in. As prosperity boomed, empires disintegrated and technology connected up the world, the old class-based politics was replaced by identity politics and a new pre-occupation with the global. Across the West there was a cultural shift as an entire generation rebelled against all forms of authority, choosing instead to experiment – politically, sexually, spiritually.

Under the banner of ‘liberation’ from the old order, a whole host of new movements and intellectual theories gathered, including but not limited to:

• The sexual liberation movement
  
• The anti-capitalist movement
  
• The anti-war movement
  
• The radical green movement
  
• Moral/cultural relativism (the idea that there are no absolute rights or wrongs)
  
• Post-structuralism (the idea that it is impossible to understand the world through universally applicable concepts or ‘grand meta-narratives’)
  
• Third World ‘liberation’ movements
  
• Post-colonial theories (the corresponding academic movement re-narrating the West’s history of colonialism as an unadulterated evil)
  

What unites all of these profoundly influential movements is their pursuit of freedom – by any means necessary - from the perceived ‘oppression’ of the old order of Western culture, grounded as it was in Judeo-Christian beliefs and principles.^2,3

This has manifested most notably through a revival of atheistic Marxism, which turns Judeo-Christian principles on their head and which has been mobilised systematically – and often intentionally - to undermine and overturn them. But Marxism, as we well know, carries within it an illiberal spirit of subjugation and control – not the ‘freedom’ it promises, but tyranny.

While the Cold War seemingly dealt a death blow to communism, the Marxist concept of life as a power struggle between oppressed and oppressor, resolvable only through radical system-change and the forced imposition of a new order, was being re-fashioned in the halls of the Western intelligentsia as a socio-cultural (cf. economic) theory. This eventually became the new guiding ideology for most Western educators, politicians and journalists – and it remains so today.

It was, therefore, the 1960s, 70s and 80s and the gradual rise to prominence of ‘cultural Marxism’ under the guise of social ‘progressivism’, that gave us victim culture and identity politics, the doctrine of multi-culturalism, political correctness and the policing of speech and thought, and the extension of coercive state power into every sphere of life, for ‘the greater good’ of enforced equality.

This era saw the re-organising of Western political and legal systems around a new morality marked by permissiveness, boundary-pushing and a lack of respect for the sanctity of human life. It also saw the entry of Jeremy Corbyn into left-wing activism and politics.

The Marxist concept of power struggle was re-fashioned as a socio-cultural theory which eventually became the new guiding ideology for Western educators, politicians and journalists.

Zionism Inverted

Under this new system, Zionism was inverted: it was no longer a socialist dream for the pursuit of national self-determination by an oppressed people fleeing Western persecution (and with every historical and legal right to return to their homeland), but an oppressive outpost of Western colonialism, with the real victims being the Palestinians. Followed through, this thinking has entrenched on the left the belief that the Israeli state is a racist, colonialist, fascist endeavour that has no right to exist.

White Western Jewish immigrants enjoying increasing economic and military success could not (even despite the Holocaust) possibly attain to the level of powerlessness and victimhood claimed for darker-skinned, Muslim Arabs. The former, as oppressive occupiers, could do no right. The latter, as oppressed victims, could do no wrong.

And this is the nub of the problem: because of its a priori ideology, left-wing progressives see the world and its problems through a particular grid of assumed power relationships that dictate who is right and who is wrong, who is righteous and who is evil, before the evidence is even considered. Reality is then contorted to fit this picture.

Appeal to Labour

That the British Labour Party bought into this utterly inverted worldview shouldn’t be entirely surprising. After all, cultural Marxism mobilises emotive, virtuous-sounding concepts that seemingly run close to traditional Labour values, such as the plight of the oppressed and justice for the most vulnerable.

However, concepts of oppression, vulnerability, freedom and equality here are twisted and inverted to serve a very different ideology than the one which motivated Keir Hardie – one which strips God, his boundaries and ethics, from the picture entirely.

And it is this secular humanist, ‘progressive’ version of social justice (really the French Revolution in new clothes), to which Jeremy Corbyn subscribes more ardently and consistently than most of his colleagues.

From Anti-Zionism to Anti-Semitism

And so we arrive at today’s situation, where the current Labour leader’s antics place fourth on the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s ‘Top Ten Global Anti-Semitic Incidents’ of 2018. Corbyn makes common cause with Islamist terrorists who overtly seek Jewish genocide while refusing to meet with Israelis, defends and celebrates terror attacks on Israeli Jews and allows anti-Semitic chants to be sung at the Labour Party Conference.

He fails to defend Jewish MPs in his own party as they are singled out for torrents of verbal abuse and death threats, and targeted internally for unseating. He also refuses to recognise that the Party even has an anti-Semitism problem (let alone apologise for it), while his supporters dismiss the allegations as a vicious smear.

Rife within Momentum are Holocaust denials and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories that seem more at home on the far-right (indeed, the far-left is blind to them for this very reason). References to ‘Zio-Nazis’ or to ‘apartheid’ Israel degenerate quickly into age-old anti-Semitic tropes, from blood-sucking, baby-killing Jews to Jews as evil masterminds manipulating the world. Israel is singled out uniquely and disproportionately for distorted, ideologically-motivated criticism.

Fuller accounts of Labour’s anti-Semitism problem can be found easily elsewhere. Suffice to say that, in the span of a generation, the Labour Party has completely inverted its position on Israel, and that this has triggered a drastic rise in anti-Semitic attitudes. The inevitability of this slide into anti-Semitism can be argued from both a biblical/spiritual and a philosophical perspective (though many would undoubtedly disagree).

Left-wing progressives see the world and its problems through a particular grid of power relationships that dictate who is righteous and who is evil before the evidence is even considered.

Conclusions

With the whole of the 20^th Century in view, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that Jeremy Corbyn is not a freak accident, but an extreme, outlying example of a general trend: the shift of British politics towards the extreme secular left, in rebellion against our former commitment to biblical ethics and ideals. In the words of Melanie Phillips, “Corbyn is not the cause of left-wing Jew hate – he’s the result”.⁴

The roots of this issue lie in our cutting ourselves loose from our spiritual and ethical moorings in the Judeo-Christian scriptures, a move being described by some as cultural suicide. It is no coincidence that this has brought with it a volte-face regarding Israel and, from there, the Jewish people.

From a biblical perspective, the situation is quite simple. An embrace of God’s word produces not only a love of God’s ethics, but also a respect for all that he has marked as his own – whether land or people. Rejection of his word induces a hatred of all who are connected to it - all who bear his name.

This hatred, in turn, results in a cursing (Gen 12:3) which the Labour Party – despite its honourable beginnings – may even now be experiencing, and from which it may never recover.

Chris Pateman reviews ‘Money: The Great Deception’ by Gottfried Hetzer (self-published, 2018).

The Lord laid it out pretty clearly in Deuteronomy 28: blessings for obedience to his principles would make his people ‘the head and not the tail’, and sufficiently prosperous to be able to lend to those in need. Curses for disobedience would make them ‘the tail and not the head’, needing to borrow to stay alive. In which of those camps are today’s horrendously indebted nations? In which of them are today’s credit-card-owning, mortgage-paying Christians?

Gottfried Hetzer’s 15 years as a financial controller for international corporations have certainly given him some useful insights into banking policy and international capital flows. But it’s his love for the Lord and for Kingdom principles which shines through the 200 pages of this crisp and insightful book on that particularly controversial issue: money.

You don’t need an economics degree or a banking background to understand that the world is in a financial mess. And thankfully, that’s just where Hetzer starts: he writes clearly and accessibly, without presuming any prior level of financial knowledge. This is a book anyone can read, and arguably, a book every Christian should read.

Analysing Babylon

Structured in six parts, Hetzer starts by analysing how the world financial system works, explaining simply why money is a more useful tool than barter, as well as basic concepts like interest, inflation and deflation. He then unpacks problems with the current system, covering topics such as debt, corruption, speculation, artificial money creation, ecological exploitation and war.

Hetzer offers a chillingly simple explanation of how modern banks are allowed to treat their investors’ money as their own, lending it out multiple times and making money out of nothing, giving nothing back to society, concentrating more and more power in fewer and fewer hands, and disadvantaging the least able in society.

Gottfried Hetzer’s 15 years as a financial controller have certainly given him some useful insights on money - but it’s his love for the Lord which shines through.

Building his critique, he eventually concludes that the global financial system has become so distorted, corrupt and destructive as to be worthy of the title ‘Babylon’. We have arrived at a situation far from God’s original design, where people serve ‘the system’ rather than the system serving people.

The next two sections of the book are devoted to problem-solving, looking at worldly ‘solutions’ to financial issues and then contrasting these with biblical principles. Time and again, the ideologies and ethics that underpin the world of finance are shown to fall short of the values outlined in Scripture, with the conclusion drawn that an entirely different, Kingdom-based approach is needed.

Personal Advice

Hetzer makes compelling arguments about corporate banking, but it’s at the ‘what does this mean for me?’ level that this book really excels. Time and again he reminds us that everything we have is God’s anyway; that we are just stewards; that naked we came into this world and naked we will depart.

Constant reference to Bible texts (and occasional references to the apocryphal Sirach) keep both author and reader rooted in God’s word, as the book moves from issue to issue.

Are we sure God is calling us to own a house – or are we assuming this because it’s what our culture says we are entitled to? Might he not be calling us to witness to our landlord by being an exemplary tenant? We may have God in our home lives and our work lives, but how often do we make him the head of our financial decision-making?

Pertinent and Practical

This is a helpful, challenging, biblical book that is pertinent for our present times, offering a ‘big picture’ commentary as well as a lot of practical, personal advice, and always putting money in its proper place: in true submission to the rule of Christ.

Time and again Hetzer reminds us that everything we have is God’s anyway; that we are just stewards; that naked we came into this world and naked we will depart.

Hetzer divides the book into useful thematic sub-sections (e.g. ‘Inflation’, ‘Bribery’, ‘Interest’) so it can easily be revisited as a reference source. But it’s not just a textbook: it is a challenge to our worldly attitudes towards money that also offers a biblical alternative. We may not be able to change the whole world, but we can certainly change our own attitudes. Hetzer gives us plenty of Kingdom advice on precisely how – on everything from tithing to car sales.

Hetzer’s introduction ends with this thought (p10): “remember, creation has delivered its own Creator to the cross for a ridiculous 30 silver coins. Isn’t it disturbing that the image of God (here the man Judas) has delivered God Himself for a pittance to die innocently?”

A useful and stimulating book.

God must sometimes tear down in order to build up.

Why are our politicians still in confusion? Why is there no shared vision or clear strategy in Westminster after so many months of debate? Surely the simple answer has to be that there are no political solutions to the problems in the nation. But when will our political representatives realise that something is wrong and begin to look below the surface for the real problem – and the real answer?

The evidence that Britain is a sick society is all around in our daily news: the huge rise in knife crime in the past five years, young people dying on our city streets, the homeless sheltering in shopfronts, children becoming drug mules, self-harming, suicides, domestic violence, family breakdown, gambling addiction, alcohol problems, poverty, inequality - we could go on and on with an endless list of symptoms.

But they all come back to the same source – our society-wide rejection of truth, trust, faithfulness, integrity, justice, love, unselfishness, service and loyalty - all the values of the Gospel set out in the Bible that used to be taught to our children in every state school and in Sunday schools.

We have ditched the lot! So, our children have no yardstick by which to measure truth; and we are surprised when their world of social media, soaked in fake news and lies, leads them into depression, self-harming and suicide. The media rages against paedophiles who groom vulnerable children online, but are we not a nation of child abusers in the eyes of God? We have despised his word and we are reaping the harvest.

A Second Chance?

It’s time to face up to reality: Brexit will not solve our problems! But to remain in the EU would be even worse. And the worst possible outcome would be another referendum! The nation is already bitterly divided and calling for a so-called ‘People’s Vote’ is a recipe for civil war!

Maybe all the Brexit negotiations are pointless anyway as the EU itself appears to be set on a course for disintegration. Populist movements are gaining momentum across Europe which is likely to bring in a lot of hostile MEPs in the EU election in May. With Italy in recession and France and Germany not far behind, if Britain leaves without a deal and without paying its £39 billion settlement bill, it could be a fatal blow to the EU.¹

It’s time to face up to reality: Brexit will not solve our problems!

If Britain succeeds in getting out of the European Union next month in the face of massive opposition, I believe it will be a sign that God is giving us a second chance and an opportunity to deal with the social problems in the nation.

The Cost of Revival

At the Wembley Arena Prayer Day, I made two points which I believe are important:

1. God holds the Church responsible for the moral and spiritual state of the nation.
   
2. There will be no revival in the nation until there is repentance in the Church.
   

I apologise for referring again to the Wembley event. I’ve taken a lot of flak for appearing on that platform, but at the risk of indulging in self-justification, I really have to say that I still believe it was right for me to go there and say those two things – and possibly also to witness the teaching that is appearing in some of our churches!

I was a lone voice calling for repentance at Wembley, which should worry Bible-believing Christians because we know that judgment begins at the house of the Lord. If we do not recognise our responsibility for the state of the nation and repent before God, there really is no hope for Britain!

Why is it that when evangelicals come together for prayer, the predominant thing they want to do is to call upon God to send a revival? What they often don’t realise is that the cost of revival is repentance for our responsibility for the mess in the nation. We are part of a Church whose preachers have committed adultery, have broken their marriage vows, have indulged in sodomy, have lied and cheated. We have allowed Scripture to be manipulated in support of sinful lifestyles. We have tolerated televangelists with luxurious lifestyles and enjoyed the pronouncements of false prophets who have tickled our ears with promises of power, miracles, signs and wonders.

How do we dare to ask God to send a revival to such a Church? I am due to address a lunchtime meeting at the Church of England Synod next Thursday in London, and I intend asking how we can expect God to bless a Church that is not giving clear godly leadership to the nation in a time of great turmoil.

If Christians do not recognise their responsibility for the state of the nation and repent before God, there really is no hope for Britain!

Learning from Jeremiah

In the Prophet Jeremiah’s day, he faced a similar situation. The religious leadership of the nation, the Temple priesthood, were as corrupt as the rest of the population. Jeremiah said “I have seen something horrible: they commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his wickedness. They are like Sodom to me, the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah” (Jer 23:14).

Do you not think that God is saying something similar to us, not only in Britain but in all the Western nations, where we have had the Gospel for centuries but we have turned away from the ways of righteousness – selling our inheritance for a mess of pottage?

Jeremiah was told that God’s purpose for the nation was peace and prosperity – Jeremiah’s task was to build and to plant. But there were six verbs in this instruction, not just two. They were “To uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.” The nation was so advanced in corruption, immorality and idolatry, that a lot of things had to be removed from its culture before there could be blessing and prosperity.

God was giving notice to Jeremiah that he was about to shake the nation to its very foundations. The great institutions of state, its political and economic structures, including its religion, would all be shaken. Nothing would be spared. This is what happened in 586 BC when the Babylonian army tore down the walls of Jerusalem, destroying the Temple, the Palace and all the great buildings.

Is God today warning the Western nations that the whole of our civilisation is coming under judgment? How much uprooting and tearing down must be done before building and planting is possible again? Has God brought Islam into the West for judgment, or to expose its false teaching and bring about a Muslim harvest for the Gospel, along with a revival of true biblical Christianity in the West?

At a Crossroads

Surely today we are at a crossroads. It is not only Brexit that is a warning sign, but the populist movement that is spreading across Europe, and the huge divisions that are shaking America. The ‘Arab Spring’ began the shaking of Islam. God has promised to shake all nations – he has already started.

Surely it is time to search the scriptures for understanding of the times and come before the Lord with repentance, humility, trust and hope for the future.

The Prophet's message for our times.

The first in a new series looking at the lives and ministries of the Old Testament prophets, particularly in light of our situation in Britain today.

Jeremiah lived in a time of great turbulence, on both the international and the domestic scenes. Internationally, three great empires, Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon, were vying for dominance, while on the domestic front Jeremiah saw the reigns of five kings, bitter political rivalries and moral and spiritual decay.

In the 22 years from the death of Josiah in 608 BC to the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BC, four kings reigned in Jerusalem, none of whom were godly men. Two of the four, Jehoiahaz and Jehoiachin each only reigned three months, while Jehoiakim and Zedekiah each reigned 11 years. The two short reigns were each the result of military conquest.

From One Tragedy to the Next

Josiah was killed in battle at Megiddo when the Egyptian army was passing through the territory of Judah en route to face the Assyrians. Josiah foolishly decided to oppose them, despite the fact that the Egyptians had said that they had no quarrel with Judah.

He lost his life in an entirely unnecessary battle and was succeeded by Jehoiahaz who, only three months later, was taken in captivity to Egypt. This was following the surrender of Jerusalem and the payment of crippling amounts of gold and silver, none of which would have happened if Josiah had not intervened in a dispute between the two empires.

The history of Judah, from that moment, went from one tragedy to the next until the final decimation of all its towns and cities and the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian army in 586 BC. Jeremiah was in Jerusalem throughout this time, witnessing each stage of the national tragedy. This is reflected in the account of his ministry recorded in the book that bears his name in the Bible.

Vassal Kingdom

Following Jehoiahaz’s short reign, Jehoiakim was appointed by the Egyptians, whose power was greatly weakened later on in the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BC. This had involved all three empires, with Babylon emerging as the strongest power. Judah was seen as a vassal of Egypt, which drew the wrath of Babylon. As their army approached Jerusalem in 598 BC, Jehoiakim died (or was assassinated).

He was succeeded by his 18-year-old son Jehoiachin, who reigned just three months until Jerusalem surrendered to Babylon in the spring of 597 BC. He was taken captive to Babylon, together with many thousands of the leading citizens of the land plus most of Judah’s army and the most valuable articles from the temple (2 Kings 24).

Terrible Destruction Foretold

Then, Zedekiah was put on the throne by Nebuchadnezzar. Zedekiah was a weak and foolish man who sought to enter into a conspiracy with the surrounding nations of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon – fiercely opposed by Jeremiah in chapter 27.

It was this act of treachery by Zedekiah, who had sworn allegiance to Babylon in the name of Yahweh, God of Israel, that enraged Nebuchadnezzar and caused him to come back ten years after the surrender of Jerusalem and this time decimate the whole land. He destroyed towns and villages, raped the countryside and laid siege to Jerusalem causing great suffering to the people, until the city fell in July 587 BC.

Most of the remaining citizens and many from the land were taken to Babylon in the second Exile. The great walls of Jerusalem were torn down; the Temple and the Palace and most of the great buildings were destroyed. Zedekiah’s family were murdered in front of him, then his eyes were gouged out and he was taken to Babylon as the prize exhibit in Nebuchadnezzar’s victory parade.

Jeremiah had foretold all these terrible events, more than once telling Zedekiah what his personal fate would be. But none of these things would have happened if the word of the Lord had been obeyed.

Similarities with Today

If king and people had been willing to humble themselves and to put their trust in the Lord, they would have been preserved from destruction. God would have found a way of working out his purposes among the nations while preserving and protecting his own covenant people, among whom he had established his name and through whom it was his intention to reveal himself to the pagan nations.

It was God’s intention to use Babylon as part of his purposes so that for 70 years they would dominate the region. After that time, God would deal with the Babylonians themselves for their cruelty and arrogance, as Jeremiah records in 25:11-12. The Exile lasted until Cyrus the Persian overthrew the Babylonian Empire and took Babylon in 538 BC, when the people of Judah were released to return to their land and rebuild Jerusalem.

But the Exile would never have happened if the word of the Lord through Jeremiah had been heeded.

Forewarning

Jeremiah claimed that God had revealed to him the threat from Babylon and he gave clear warning of what would happen: “This is what the Lord says: Look, an army is coming from the land of the north [Babylon]; a great nation is being stirred up from the ends of the earth. They are armed with bow and spear; they are cruel and show no mercy. They sound like the roaring sea as they ride on their horses; they come like men in battle formation to attack you, O Daughter of Zion” (Jer 6:22-23).

Jeremiah also knew that it was no use relying on either Egypt or Assyria to protect them from Babylon. He said “Now why go to Egypt to drink water from the Shihor? And why go to Assyria to drink water from the River? Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realise how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the Lord your God and have no awe of me, declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty” (Jer 2:18-19).

Sadly, the politicians, the religious leaders and the people ignored the prophet among them, continuing in idolatry and turning their backs upon the word of the Lord. In one sentence Jeremiah describes the spiritual condition of the nation: “Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said, ‘I will not serve you!’ Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute” (Jer 2:20). Jeremiah knew that by turning their backs upon God, both leaders and people had put themselves outside the Lord’s protection.

Nevertheless, Jeremiah continued throughout his 40 years’ ministry in Jerusalem to call for repentance and returning to God as the only way, both to national safety and to salvation. He was still calling for repentance when the Babylonian army was surrounding the walls of Jerusalem, because he knew that repentance would immediately bring the forgiveness, restoration and protection of God. He knew that God had the power to send a plague through the enemy army overnight, as he had done in the time of Hezekiah (2 Kings 19:35). But Jeremiah’s warnings were not heard or heeded.

This is the tragedy that history records - and this is why the Book of Jeremiah has great significance for the Western nations in the world today. They, like Israel, have had biblical truth for many generations and, like Zedekiah, have conspired with one another to reject the truth and follow other gods and philosophies and cultures, to their own harm.

In studying the Book of Jeremiah, we can see many similarities with modern history. This is why we are undertaking this study on Prophecy Today UK.

Pupils play truant in protest against climate change

Thousands of children are set to walk out of school today in a nationwide protest over ‘climate change’.

Militant eco-warriors have apparently fuelled this bizarre action which seems to have the unofficial support of many teachers and even Christian charities.¹

So while parents are fined for taking their children out of school during term time, usually for the understandable reason of avoiding the high cost of holidays when schools are normally closed, teachers are given a free ride. Or will they too be fined? We shall wait and see.

One teachers’ union initially backed the idea by suggesting it would be “a valuable life experience”² before re-thinking its position along the lines that missing lessons would be detrimental to children’s education.

But both statements miss the point, which is that by letting pupils become obsessively politicised in this way undermines the entire structure of society and is tantamount to inciting rebellion, not to say revolution.

Exceptional Circumstances?

Our charge is to “train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Prov 22:6). Discipline is essential, but now we have children being encouraged to call the shots – all in the name of equality, I suppose. Leaving such ‘decisions’ to impressionable youngsters is a gross abdication of our responsibility. But it’s an upside-down world.

The Department for Education said it was a matter for individual schools, but stressed that pupils could take time off only in ‘exceptional circumstances’ – apparently including illness, a family funeral or a religious day of observance – and then only when authorised by a headteacher.³

As Daily Mail columnist Richard Littlejohn put it, “if parents can be punished for taking children out of school, then why can’t those we entrust to act in loco parentis?”⁴

The question is surely whether such a strike falls into the above ‘exceptional’ category, though Littlejohn, with tongue in cheek, suggests it is “undoubtedly a quasi-religious event”.

Teaching Rebellion

It would be a little more reasonable if they were being urged to protest over child abuse, or some other issue that affected pupils directly – although I can already hear a wailing chorus declaring that they are marching for their future under a carbon-free sky.

In reality, supporting such outright rebellion against authority is a recipe for disaster that could lead to widespread anarchy and chaos. In the words of the 16-year-old striker from Sweden who started the campaign, “We can’t save the world by playing by the rules because the rules have to be changed. Everything needs to change”.⁵

As for the issue itself that has gripped their attention, it is a classic example of the fake news that has swamped the media and political environment in recent decades.

And it was shocking to witness the laid-back attitude to these protests displayed by media commentators on Sunday morning TV as they swapped nostalgic anecdotes of similar action they took when young.

Supporting such outright rebellion against authority is a recipe for disaster that could lead to widespread anarchy.

Spiritual Vacuum

A key factor in all this is the spiritual vacuum into which such political activity is being played out. With depression and suicide rife among young people living in a make-believe world awash with dark messages of hopelessness, and all too few evangelists available to point them to a Saviour, it is entirely understandable that they should feel the need to be part of something meaningful.

They are thus easy prey for the false gospel of man-made global warming, based on the humanistic idea that everything depends on us because, with this thinking, God did not create the world. And if we want to save the planet, we must do everything we can to preach the need for humans to do what God is apparently incapable of doing.

I believe it is not only a gigantic hoax, but a massive distraction from the real problems facing our world – like the crisis in the Middle East which could well lead to World War III, or the torture of Christians in Muslim nations which provokes little sympathy or action from the West.

I also believe that much of the stress of today’s society – which results in millions of working days lost each year – is down to the same humanistic ideology trapping people into believing there is no way out of their fearful predicaments; that there is no-one to call on for help.

Who Do We Trust?

But there is a God upon whom we can depend and in whom we can trust for our lives and our futures. The Book of Proverbs also says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him; and he will direct your paths” (Prov 3:5f).

Trusting in God is not an abrogation of personal responsibility, but provides you with the ability to act with true wisdom. As the Bible also says (on several occasions), “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

This doesn’t mean the Bible has nothing to say about climate change. For it was when Jesus was asked about the signs that would indicate his imminent return that our Lord replied: “There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.”

And he added: “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time, they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:11, 25-28).

Clearly, from that last comment, we should be looking to God at this time, and not to man’s inadequate solutions.

‘He’s not fit to govern’, says ex-colleague of Britain’s Labour leader

Revelations expected to further stoke the fires over Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of anti-Semitism within the Labour Party have been published in the British press.

The Mail on Sunday has dedicated a dozen pages of coverage to initial serialisation of a new book by one of the country’s leading investigative authors.

Tom Bower’s Dangerous Hero (to be published on 21 February by William Collins at £20) is a damning expose of a man ‘not fit to govern’, even in the words of long-time friend and former hard-left MP Reg Race.

“He’s not fit to be leader of the Labour Party, and not fit to be Britain’s Prime Minister,” the man who worked closely with Mr Corbyn over three decades is quoted as saying.¹

Coinciding with the serialisation comes news of vicious racist attacks against Jewish Labour MP Luciana Berger over claims she plans to join a breakaway movement along with several others. This was followed by an admission from the Party’s deputy leader Tom Watson that the Liverpool parliamentarian is indeed being bullied by constituency activists, as claimed.²

In doing so, Mr Watson repeated his call for the Party branch in Liverpool Wavertree to be suspended over its treatment of her.

Ruthless Tactics

Alarmingly, tucked in among the acres of copy on Mr Corbyn straddling the voluminous Sunday paper was the observation that he was ‘insult-proof’.

The culture of intimidation that is shaping today’s Labour Party is a culmination of 40 years of following Lenin’s and Trotsky’s bloody blueprint of seizing power, purging moderates and crushing dissent, Bower concludes.

“And, just like today, the man secretly driving it all swore blind that it had nothing to do with him.”

Upon his resignation in 1992 as Corbyn’s constituency agent, Keith Veness is quoted as having said: “You’re an anarchic shambles, without any discipline.”

The leader of Her Majesty’s official opposition has famously talked of engaging in “a kinder, gentler politics”, but a very different story of ruthless tactics is emerging.

A relentless campaign to root out moderates classified MPs into five categories in which every Jewish MP was ‘hostile’ or ‘negative’ including former Labour leader Ed Miliband, who represents the Doncaster North constituency in my hometown.

High on the list of targets was Ben Bradshaw, the MP for Exeter in Devon, who denounced Corbyn as a “destructive combination of incompetence, deceit and menace”.

And the intimidation of Ms Berger was not unique. “Many female Labour MPs, particularly Jews, complained of renewed abuse by the Left,” writes Bower.

Denying God

Corbyn was evidently an academic failure who apparently doesn’t read books. This is a shame because, for his 16^th birthday, his mother gave him a collection of George Orwell’s essays. Orwell’s Animal Farm – a classic allegorical tale of the destructive and hypocritical dogmatism of communism – might have proved a useful lighthouse keeping his ship away from the rocks.

The trouble is, he has failed to build his life on the Rock – Jesus, the Jewish Messiah – which ultimately explains his reluctance to deal effectively with gross anti-Semitism within his party.

Opposition to Israel is usually associated with denial of God, for it is the God of Israel whom Christians worship and who forms the basis of our Judeo-Christian civilisation which the likes of Corbyn are so keen to destroy.

Corbyn’s ‘kinder, gentler politics’ has involved a relentless campaign to root out moderates, classifying MPs into categories and labelling every Jewish MP ‘hostile’ or ‘negative’.

In its place, all they have to offer is the prospect of a lifeless, colourless, totalitarian regime that imprisons people into ghettos of misery, poverty and purposelessness.

But the greatest teacher of all time said: “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognise them” (Matt 7:15f).

And then he added: “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

“But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash” (Matt 7:24-27).

Exploited idealism and deliberate deception.

Editorial introduction: In the first of two articles, David Longworth looks back over a year of the ‘March of Return’ at the Gaza border.

According to Enas Fares Ghannam,¹ it all started in 2011. A Facebook post expressed the dream of a 33-year-old man in Gaza named Ahmed Abu Ratima. Gazing at a tree on the other side of the barbed fence that separates the Strip from Israel, Abu Ratima had thought, “Why can’t I go and sit under that tree just for a while, like a free bird?” The post asked (rather impractically) what could happen if 200,000 Palestinians headed peacefully to cross the border.

As the Arab Spring swept the region, Abu Ratima and his friends issued a statement entitled ‘The Palestinian Refugees Revolution’, calling all Palestinian refugees to gather peacefully at the nearest point by the Israeli border to call for their ‘rights’. At the time, they were considered crazy. But in 2018, Abu Ratima and his friends found encouragement.

In early 2018, Gazan journalist Muthana al-Najjar, whose family originally hailed from Salama (near Jaffa), pitched a tent near the border. He stayed for over a month, while others began planting olive tree seedlings in the area. But these idealised aspirations were soon taken over by the Hamas authorities.

Public preparations for a mass protest started to appear in February. On the 6^th, Hamas official Isma'il Radwan said that the activity would begin on 30 March and would reach its peak on 15 May, ‘Nakhba Day’.² He stressed that this activity "should take place without clashes [with Israel] in order to protect the young people...The plan of action focused on organizing a march of hundreds of thousands towards the border in order to pressure the occupation."³

Idealism Exploited

On 22 February 2018, the ominous image on the right was posted on Facebook:⁴

The UN symbol and the ‘194’ refer to UN Resolution 194 (of December 1948), which resolved that “refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date” (my emphasis), the so-called ‘Right of Return’. When the resolution was passed it was envisaging those who had just become refugees, not the millions of later generations.

The key evokes memories of those who left having locked their homes and retained their keys: another powerful symbol of ‘Right to Return’. However, notice that the key is held in a red clenched fist, a not-so-subtle suggestion of aggression.

Note also that the area between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean is entirely covered by the colours of the Palestinian flag. This image therefore denies not only the territories agreed under the Oslo Accords, but also UN Resolution 181, of 29 November 1947, which agreed the partition of the British Mandate of Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states.

By 28 February 2018 the Great Return March Facebook page featured a much clearer emphasis on violence, as the left-hand picture illustrates (the text reads, ‘We will strike the Guard Fence’, i.e. the international border security fence).⁵ 

Incitement from the Beginning

At the March’s official start on Friday 30 March, an inflammatory Islamic sermon was preached and broadcast on Hamas’s al-Aqsa TV:

We are very near our blessed land, which is being trampled by those descendants of apes and pigs. We are here to embrace the blessed land with our hearts and our eyes, which is being trampled by those accursed descendants of apes and pigs, the remnants of the brutal, savage, and barbaric colonialism, which continues to drain our resources…⁶

So much for the idealist peaceful origins! By 6 April, three Palestinians penetrated the border and planted two improvised explosive devices.⁷

Worse rhetoric was to follow. Two weeks later, at the March venue, Gaza scholar Khaled Hany Morshid, said:

Image from MEMRI, used with permission.…when the Jews of the Qurayza tribe violated their treaty with the Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet Muhammad exterminated them…The best way to describe the record of the Prophet's treatment of the Jews is one of violence and force…This is what all the Muslims should know. The relation between us and them is one of eternal enmity. The Jews will never stop this enmity unless the sword of Jihad for the sake of Allah is brandished, and they are made an example of, as was done by the Prophet Muhammad…I call upon every Muslim: Do not stand idly by and let those Jews spread corruption upon the land. Carry out glorious deeds against them!⁸

Social media posts called Palestinians to clash with Israelis after breaching the fence and entering their communities. 'Emad 'Aql, of Gaza, tweeted, "Sderot is only 700 meters east of [the Palestinian town of] Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza. The headquarters of the Israeli army is there, and houses about 800 pigs. It can be reached in two minutes on motorcycles or in five-eight minutes at a brisk run…Murder, slaughter, burn and never show them any mercy."⁹

The left-hand image was posted with the following text: "Kibbutz Kerem Shalom, east of Rafah, is only 300 meters from the border. It has turkey pens, a football field and a pool, it houses only 15 families. Pounce on them with knives."¹⁰

Deliberate Deception

By May, things were literally hotting up. Thousands of tyres were burned to create smokescreens for those attacking the fence, while mirrors were used to blind IDF soldiers. Meanwhile, Western media were decrying the injuries caused to ‘peaceful protestors’ by Israel’s defensive actions.

On 13 May, the day before the originally-planned climax of the March, Mahmoud Al-Zahhar a co-founder and senior member of Hamas, was interviewed on al-Jazeera TV, Qatar. Questioned about Hamas adopting Fatah’s ‘peaceful resistance’ policy, he replied,

This is a clear terminological deception…This is not peaceful resistance…when we talk about 'peaceful resistance’, we are deceiving the public. This is a peaceful resistance bolstered by a military force and by security agencies, and enjoying tremendous popular support…This deception does not fool the Palestinian public.¹¹

On 16 May, Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, was interviewed for the same channel, saying,

I must emphasize a great strategic goal accomplished on May 14. Our people in Gaza recorded, for the whole world to see, their testimony over the transfer of the United States embassy to Jerusalem and the declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of the occupation entity. On behalf of the Arab Palestinian people and all the Arab and Islamic peoples, our people in Gaza have rejected that decision and that move, by this great activity and by recording its testimony for the sake of history, and by signing this testimony with the blood of the martyrs – our people sacrificed sixty martyrs on May 14, as well as three thousand wounded…Many of them took off their military uniforms and put their weapons aside…¹²

Here we can clearly see the shameless use of ‘martyrdom’ as a motivating factor when inciting aggression against Israel. Sinwar openly admits to satisfaction in the gruesome outcome. Moreover, he also admits that many protestors weren’t ordinary civilians!

The involvement of militants was confirmed in more detail in a broadcast on Baladna TV, Gaza, on the same day, by a member of the Palestinian National Council:

50 of the martyrs were from Hamas, and the other 12 were regular people…What did Hamas gain? 50 martyrs...I am giving you an official figure. 50 of the martyrs in the recent battle were from Hamas. Before that, at least 50% of the martyrs were from Hamas.¹³

Other Tactics

In addition to the above, in the last year tactics have included hand grenades, stones and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) being hurled across the border. Snipers have been in action. Hundreds of rockets and mortars have been deployed.

According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, by mid-October almost 3,300 acres of forest and 4,000 acres of farmland had been destroyed by incendiaries carried by kites and balloons from Gaza.¹⁴ In the forest nature reserves, thousands of animals perished and conservation work was set back by decades. Earlier, as the wheat harvest was imminent, the loss of crops by farmers was estimated at £1.4 million. On one kibbutz alone, some 320 acres of irrigation equipment was also destroyed. In addition, honey farms, avocado and jojoba orchards were devastated.¹⁵

Sometimes explosives were carried similarly, such as those attached to gaily-decorated helium balloons which landed close to a kindergarten in late December.

Another tactic has been deception by false news reports and the posting of staged video clips on social media. Of one such incident on 4 May, IDF video footage shows a group of Palestinians rushing away a seemingly-injured man on a stretcher; then, after smoke and bushes provide some screening, the man clearly rolls off the stretcher, gets up and walks away!¹⁶ Also in May, the death by tear gas of 8-month-old baby Layla Ghandour was widely reported. By 26 June it emerged that the father is a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade who admitted that his daughter died from a prior condition and that he had been paid $8,000 by Hamas to lie.

Sadly, the damage of these ‘news’ items is done by their high initial impact, with later revisions mattering little.

Conclusions

Whatever the original intentions of the March of Return, it has clearly turned into an ugly, deceitful battle, on the ground and in the media. Next week we will ask where things are now, in 2019, and put the Palestinian ‘cause’ in greater context.

Meanwhile, watchfulness, discernment and prayer remain essential weapons for Christians in the battle for truth.

Arab family links up with Jews to spread gospel in the region

When the Israeli town of Nazareth is mentioned, most people immediately think of Jesus. It’s where he came from.

But when Nathanael, one of Christ’s first disciples, heard that the Messiah was from Nazareth, he responded rather sceptically with the question: “Can anything good come from there?” (John 1:46).

The same question is sometimes asked today, as the Galilean town is now an entirely Arab community with very few Christian believers.

Discovering Forgiveness

Step in the Sakhnini family. Although part of the town’s minority Christian-Arab population, there was a time when being ‘Christian’ merely described their culture – it just meant that, unlike most of the Arab world, they were not Muslims.

That is until 2007 when Bishara, a barber and head of the family, was betrayed by a close friend – and soon afterwards received news that his sister-in-law was dying of cancer, with only a month to live. In the midst of it all, his wife Sarah was found to be expecting their fourth child.

A pastor from Haifa then befriended Bishara and began to share what the Bible teaches, especially about forgiveness. As a result, Bishara forgave his friend and received true forgiveness for his own sins.

Not only that, but his whole family, including his three pre-teen sons, agreed to fast for three days as they prayed for their stricken relative, who subsequently walked out of hospital completely healed! And Sarah had a healthy baby soon afterwards despite an initial scare.

When Nathanael heard that the Messiah was from Nazareth, he responded rather sceptically: “Can anything good come from there?” (John 1:46).

One New Man

Having witnessed such miracles, including the power of fasting and forgiveness, the family’s transformation sent shockwaves through the community. But they were scorned by their Arab neighbours, just as Jesus had been at the hands of the Jewish religious leaders.

And their world understanding was further rocked when some Jewish believers came to visit. The family hadn’t even realised Jesus was Jewish, let alone that an increasing number of Jews believe in him. Now they worship together with their Jewish brothers on a regular basis.

“Seeing us sing and dance together as we worship the same God,” writes Messianic musician Shani Ferguson in Maoz Israel’s January report, “was mesmerizing to outsiders and always elicited questions.”

She adds that “there is no greater testimony to unbelieving Jews that Yeshua [Jesus in Hebrew] has power over all than when Arabs embrace them as the people of their Saviour.”

It’s a little known fact that Arabs and Jews are meeting together at an increasing number of fellowships all over Israel, demonstrating the truth of the Gospel that true peace and reconciliation can only be found through what Jesus has done on the Cross.

The Apostle Paul wrote: “For he himself [Christ] is our peace, who has made the two groups [Jew and Gentile] one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility…” (Eph 2:14).

Arabs and Jews are meeting together at an increasing number of fellowships all over Israel, demonstrating the Gospel’s power of true peace and reconciliation.

They are currently working on a unique album – including some original and some old Arab hymns – which will cost about $20,000 to complete.
