Here is another book which takes us through the Jewish calendar and helps us understand what we can learn from the biblical holidays as we seek to relate our Christian faith to its Jewish roots.
As well as a brief explanation of each festival there is an exploration of the traditional and spiritual meaning of each holiday. A description is also given of how Jewish people have celebrated these occasions and this is then related to the teaching and ministry of Jesus. The writer has spent seven years living in Israel and during that time was part of a Messianic community, so she writes from personal experience.
There is an opening section which gives a useful overview of the Hebrew calendar for anyone who has not come across this before. After this comes two chapters on Passover, rather than the usual one, so that we might “fully appreciate what Jesus achieved at this festival” (p.14). One of these two chapters goes into the details of the Passover meal (Seder) and includes colour pictures to illustrate how to set up a Passover demonstration meal for the benefit of those for whom this is new.
The next five chapters focus on Pentecost, the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, Tabernacles and Purim. The final chapter features Hanukkah, which, although not one of the biblical holidays, is included as it is valued by Jewish people. As such it is part of the author’s hope that her book will help build understanding in relationships between Christian and Jewish people.
Each chapter ends with the main message of each biblical holiday and a prayer. The aim of the book seems to be threefold: to show the character and nature of God, to bless Christians, and to be evangelistic. Those who already have books on this topic won’t find anything new here but it is a simple introduction which covers all the main points and could be a useful and relatively short book for those who are starting to examine the Hebraic roots of Christianity.
