David Gibson, author of ‘Rediscovering Jesus’, has released his second publication from a background of theological studies and practical ministry.
His newest title, ‘Israel and the British Empire’, makes the complex history surrounding Britain’s dealings with Israel accessible to the lay reader. Laid out with clear presentation, including biblical prophecies, the journey unfolds from a Christian-Zionist viewpoint.
Beginning with an overview of Israel’s existence, from God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis up to and past the historic day on which Israel became a modern state, the author sets the scene for Britain’s involvement.
The following chapters delve into each circumstance through the years in which Britain has been a part of Israel’s evolution. Featured are events surrounding the Balfour Declaration, the British Mandate, the Second World War, the Yom Kippur War and topics such as Jewish Aliyah. Rounding all this information up is a final chapter connecting Britain’s treatment of Israel to her own national/imperial decline, alongside a look into what the nation’s future may hold.
Gibson makes the complex history surrounding Britain’s dealings with Israel accessible to the lay reader.
With endnotes following all 12 chapters, the reader is encouraged to look into the historical facts more thoroughly and to read the quoted authors and books to gain a wider understanding of each event.
In a plea to get fellow British Christians thinking about the nation’s past, Gibson concludes by saying, “We need to acknowledge, with honesty and humility, the reprehensible attitudes and unethical behaviour in our nation that contributed to the enduring impasse in the ongoing quest for peace in Jerusalem.”
Gibson clearly states that there are ultimately many factors to be considered when delving into the history of Britain’s own decline. He concedes that there are many sides to one story and that the picture is not entirely bleak. In regards to the future of Britain’s relationship with Israel, he declares, “There is hope!”
An engaging read.
