Review: Watchmen or Wolves?

Greg Stevenson reviews ‘Watchmen or Wolves?’ by Chris and Michele Neal (2019, The Lockman Foundation)

This hard-hitting book originated with a dream, received in 2008, of a huge cross on a hill with all the pages of Scripture nailed to it. Increasing numbers of people claiming to be Christians were tearing the pages off in a frenzy - demanding the rejection and removal of God’s word until they felt comfortable with their own lifestyles – until, finally, there was revealed the mutilated body of our crucified Saviour.

In this uncompromising book, husband-and-wife team Chris and Michele Neal uncover how secular humanism and liberal ‘progressivism’ have infiltrated the Church through false teaching, poisoning her from within.

Compromised Leaders

Jesus’ primary warning for the end of days was about deception and false prophets, “for they will come to you in sheep’s clothing [appearing gentle and innocent] but inwardly they are ravenous wolves; you will know them by their fruits” (Matt 7:15). The authors equate the term ‘shepherd’ with ‘watchman to the Lord’: called to protect the flock from attacks of the enemy and warn them not to succumb to the pressures of the world.

But many pastors and teachers today in church hierarchies are not teaching the sheep the truth of God’s word, and give no warning when danger comes. They are, knowingly or unknowingly, false teachers who readily incorporate the world’s ways into their ministry and lead their flocks astray, appealing to cultural or political trends for justification rather than presenting the gospel of salvation. The Neals sound a clear alarm: a church with a wolf in charge is the most dangerous place a sheep can be.

The authors clearly identify various demonic attempts to twist the word of God, on matters such as gender and sexual (im)morality, prosperity and blessing, and Israel (i.e. Replacement Theology). Compromised leaders withhold warnings and fail to protect their flocks from cultural dangers such as complacency, cowardice, unbelief, idolatry and immorality. God’s anger against these wolves is clearly laid out in Scripture (e.g. Ezek 34; Rom 1:18).

Sounding a Trumpet

Are we listening to the trumpet clearly sounded in this timely book? The proliferation of deception and false teaching in the Church indicates that we are nearing our Lord’s return (Matt 24:4). The Apostle Peter warned of such false teachers – wolves in sheep’s clothing – secretly introducing destructive heresies (even denying the Sovereign Lord) and so bringing swift destruction upon themselves (2 Pet 2:1). From such, turn away (2 Tim 3:5).

In exposing the influence of secular humanism, occult idolatry and counterfeit teaching in the Church, this important book is a timely and provocative wake-up call for shepherds and sheep alike.

Watchmen or Wolves? Demonic takeover in the house of God’ (224pp) is available in paperback from Amazon for £8.99, or on Kindle for £4.50.
