Jewish Hopes Fulfilled

Paul Luckraft reviews ‘What’s a nice Jewish girl like you doing in a church like this?’ by Lynne Bradley (Instant Apostle, 2015).

This entertaining book is the autobiography of a Messianic Jewess whose journey into faith in Jesus is told in an honest and humorous fashion. Her life has been characterised by a constant series of ups and downs - enough to fill several lifetimes - but the main theme is the way in which God got hold of her early in life and pursued her relentlessly until she finally accepted Jesus as her Messiah.

Divine Orchestration

Lynne’s childhood desire was to become a ballet dancer and, to that end, she attended the Arts Educational School in Tring Park. It was there that she first went to church services, which she describes as mesmerising experiences that she completely loved. She records that “I never felt like I didn’t belong there, not even once. I only experienced a wonderful sense of peace within its walls” (p28). This was the beginning of God’s gentle whisper into her life.

Sadly, Lynne’s ambitions to become a ballet dancer came crashing to the ground – literally - one day, when a fall resulted in not one but two dislocated kneecaps. But she describes the accident as “the best thing that could have happened”, changing “not only my career but the whole path of my life” (p40). God was still steering her life towards himself and for his ultimate purpose.

The main theme of Lynne’s life is the way in which God pursued her relentlessly until she finally accepted Jesus as her Messiah.

Soon afterwards Lynne joined a Jewish charity theatre group, whose musical director became a close friend over many years. During that time she noticed a huge change in him and discovered that he had become a Christian. He kept telling her that Jesus was trying to get through to her too.

He also introduced her to the singer Helen Shapiro, who explained how her musical director had helped her realise that Jesus was the Messiah. Lynne initially thought this was crazy. How could a Jew believe in Jesus? Surely this was the Christian God? But a vital seed had been sown.

Crumbling Resistance

The central pages of the book tell how this seed grew and how Lynne’s search came to a climax. She already knew that if she was desperate enough to call out to God with her whole heart, then he would answer. One day she did this, and that same day saw a poster for a Helen Shapiro gospel concert.

Lynne bought a ticket and listened, spellbound, as Helen shared her testimony. Her recurrent thought was “she’s the same as me!” Here was a challenge she could not ignore.

It was a relatively short step from there to Lynne giving her life to the Lord. Someone she had met at the concert invited her to a church meeting. To Lynne’s amazement it was an Iranian church! But the pastor had just the right message from God for her and the last pieces of her resistance crumbled.

She was later baptised with 12 others, all Iranians and former Muslims - just another example of how extraordinary her life has been (something that is impossible to convey in a short review!).

By giving up her own small designs, Lynne found the bigger picture that God had for her.

A True Adventure

By giving up her own small designs, Lynne found the bigger picture that God had for her. She came to realise what an amazing and exciting adventure the Christian life is. She testifies, “You never know what blessing is awaiting you round the next corner” (p113).

In 24 short chapters, full of heartache and joy, dramatic healing, rescues and second chances, Lynne tells her story: one which will encourage everyone who reads it. It also provides a punchy challenge to allow God to do the same for us. She finishes with the question Helen Shapiro once asked her - ‘What are you waiting for?’
