Is God Giving the US a Second Chance?

Our American correspondent, Linda Louis-VanReed, shares her response to the election result.

"Such a beautiful and important evening! The forgotten man and woman will never be forgotten again. We will all come together as never before." – Donald Trump (Twitter)

In the early morning hours of 8 November 2016, I sat in front of my computer listening to Donald Trump address a crowd in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the DeVos Place Convention Center, on his last stop of the campaign trail in his bid for the office of President of the United States. As his promises of real hope and much-needed change rang through the hall, the camera panned the crowd of 18,000 people from this primarily working class community who had come to cheer him on at 1am. I listened, then closed my eyes and prayed for any small chance that those promises could become true.

In the early morning hours of 9 November 2016, in an unparalleled feat of sheer audacity by the American voting public, Donald Trump once again stood behind a podium – this time as President-elect of the United States of America.

Unlike any other president I have watched accept his call to office, Donald Trump brought not only his family, his running mate and his campaign manager to the stage - he brought his entire staff and security, and publicly thanked each and every one by name. Joining him in this great moment were political luminaries Rudolph Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Senator Jeff Sessions and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who, when given the microphone by Mr Trump, publicly thanked God for the people's choice.

Thank God, indeed!

For the past ten years, the people of the US and the UK appear to have been set on a fast-track toward being melded into a one-world government, governed by a paradigm that tells us we are not 'progressive' enough, that conservatism is dead and so is our God, that our idea of freedom is wrong-headed, and that our influence and cultural contributions must be ignored and abated at the peril of slowing the globalist utopia for which we all must strive if we are to continue to be relevant in the 21st Century. But what are some of the realities of this global worldview?

For the past ten years, the people of the US and the UK appear to have been set on a fast-track toward being melded into a one-world government.

A Global Worldview

Most people do not have a clear understanding of the realities of globalism. It seems the common narrative stems from what the media has delivered to us – globalism as a way in which everyone in the world can end division and come together as one, to help one another prosper and become 'better' people. What they do not understand is that for globalism to exist, certain conditions must be met.

The first condition is that the concept of God must die. We must become 'enlightened' and realise that this life on this planet is all there is and all that is possible. We must believe we are all 'accidental' beings, not intentionally created by a superior Being.

When we remove God, it is the same as removing the concept of 'zero.' In arithmetic, the existence of 'zero' acts as the centre point that creates value for all the other numbers, whether they are +1 or -9. Without the zero, numbers have no reference point or concrete value.

God acts as our 'zero' point, if you will. Because God exists, we have value, we have a referent for ultimate truth - and therefore, we also have moral reference. Without moral reference there is no direction for the guidance of either family or society.

Freedom Without God?

When we acknowledge God, we are able to experience true freedom as we walk in relation to his Being, his Truth. Our freedom comes from this relationship. But without God, the burden for moral parameters falls upon man. Without God, there is no 'zero' point to give us value, so our morals and personal values become situationally relative.

According to those who denounce the need for moral referents, situational relativism should produce ultimate freedom. Every human should be 'free' to act in any way he/she wishes, being responsible only for his/her individual sense of value and freedom. But deprived of any moral referents, man's thoughts and actions fluctuate constantly, fomenting instability.

When there is instability there can be no peace. Therefore, the only way to achieve peace is to create a referent. A created referent or moral base must be established either by populist whim (which is constantly in flux) or by a decree from a self-installed 'elite'. For the globalist, a populist/democratic rule is far too unpredictable and potentially unenlightened to be sustainable and/or sufferable.

Globalism is presented as a way in which everyone in the world can end division and come together as one, to help one another prosper. But it requires certain conditions, incuding the removal of God.

Because of this process, the whole goal of globalism becomes primarily peace through control. The equation is simple: God's absolute moral referent allows for freedom. Freedom allows for individuality. Individuality causes differences. Differences breed conflict. Conflict is viewed as being 'bad'. Therefore, individuality is a source of conflict and must be eliminated. To eliminate individuality, you must eliminate freedom.

Homogeneity of thought, speech, belief and action must be established. Choices that are voluntary in a free society become enforced in a global society. This is not about enlightenment, it's about enforcement. Genuine tolerance is replaced by rhetoric of tolerance, and that rhetoric is then replaced by a tolerance 'range'.1

The question is, how much freedom and individuality can a 'global' society tolerate to presumably ensure peace?

Those who are attacking the police are not fighting for social justice. Ultimately, they are creating a police state for themselves. Those who attack free speech are not freeing the oppressed from labels and hurtful jargon. They are destroying their own freedom to express their own opinions.

A New World Order

Once all of our freedoms are brought under global control, we will have a new world order, free from religion, individual expression or thought. There will be a ruling class, and it will not be us. Marx understood this. Lenin understood this. Saul Alinsky understood this. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a student of both Karl Marx and Saul Alinsky, and a self-declared globalist, understands this. For almost 40 years she has fought to make for herself a place at the table, no matter what, or who, it costs.

Donald Trump, a man who was raised in and has heavily contributed to the success of America's free-market society, who apparently sees the dangers of globalism, may well think differently.

In spite of what we may think about him personally, Donald Trump has made it clear that he still believes in an America that is great because its people have made it that way. He believes the American people are more than 'workers' and 'eaters.' He believes in the value of the small business, the creative mind, the inventive spirit. It is in his, and our, best interests to protect us from enemies, both foreign and domestic, and I believe he may well do his best to do just that. I believe he will enable us to grow closer with the UK and Israel, and together we will be an inspiration for the rest of the world.

I do not know if, as some assert, Donald Trump has become a Christian. I do not know him personally, nor do I know his family. But I can say this – when, in the early hours of the morning on 9 November 2016, Mr Donald J Trump stood behind that podium before an elated crowd, and with tears in his eyes, opened his arms wide and said, "I love this country!", that man meant every word. It felt as if, once again, America has a President. It's been a long time.

The whole goal of globalism is peace through control.

What We Can Do, Together

...but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up on wings as eagles; They shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint. (Isa 40:31)

We live in a unique time in history – a time when both America and Britain have witnessed our Father God lift his hand in mercy on our respective nations, to give us the courage we needed to make both Brexit and the populist demand for a Trump presidency, realities.

Now, the work begins for all of us. The US, the UK and Israel must bind together in faith, each of us, as individuals, pursuing and deepening our personal relationships with God, so that we might continue to stand for as long as our Father would ask of us. We cannot just declare our commitment - we must become it. The world is watching.

All glory to our God of second chances.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

American voters are facing an extremely difficult and important decision. Clifford Hill comments on how they might discern God's will - and how we can support them.

All my American friends are saying the same thing – who do we vote for? Never in the history of the USA has it been so difficult to make a choice – both candidates are seriously flawed. Voters feel they are between a rock and a hard place, or between the devil and the deep blue sea. Many committed Christians I've spoken to say they are not going to vote at all because both Clinton and Trump are so awful!

Allegations of Corruption

The US press has been full of negative accounts about both presidential candidates. Hillary Clinton has been accused of misusing her personal email account for state business when she held high office in the Obama administration. She has also been accused of being involved, together with her husband, in a huge amount of personal corruption in which they have made vast fortunes.

Trump has been accused of refusing to reveal his tax returns which allegedly show that he has hired clever accountants to hide his vast income successfully, meaning that he has paid relatively little in tax. So both candidates are mired in allegations of corruption.

Both candidates are mired in allegations of corruption.

Politically Disturbing

On the political front, Trump has a history of discrimination against African-Americans in renting his property and in employment in his enterprises. He also has made many statements in his speeches indicating prejudice against non-Americans and a xenophobic attitude, such as his declaration that he will build a wall to prevent Mexicans entering the USA illegally, and his promise to ban Muslim immigrants.

Preparations are underway for the second presidential debate, to be held this Sunday in St Louis. See Photo Credits.Preparations are underway for the second presidential debate, to be held this Sunday in St Louis. See Photo Credits.Hillary Clinton is highly distrusted by conservative voters because of her strong liberal views on abortion and same-sex marriage, as well as her support for the LGBT campaign to allow public toilets to be used by either gender (including the extending of this into state schools, which will allow boys to use the girls' toilets). She is also known to support a wide range of measures that discriminate against Christians who take a stand upon biblical principles.

Voter Indecision

It is these issues of personal corruption and unpopular political measures surrounding both candidates (and many other concerns beside) that are causing such anxiety and uncertainty among voters. Polls currently show Clinton having a small lead over Trump, although some polls show them to be level. But most significantly, recent polls also indicate that as many as 12% are presently still undecided,1 due to the unpopularity of both candidates. Many of these may not cast their votes at all.

But voter apathy could spell disaster for America. If electors are so alienated by the choice of politicians being offered to the public by the two main parties, voter turnout will be low. This not only undermines the whole process of democracy; it also has a negative impact upon the spiritual life of the nation. That may sound a strange thing to say, but it is based upon a major spiritual principle – the sovereignty of God.

Voter apathy and indecision could spell disaster for America.

God's Sovereignty

Most Christians don't really understand the 'sovereignty of God' because very little is taught about it in our churches and we don't really like verses in the Bible that speak about it. Take a look at two key verses:

Come and see the works of the Lord, the desolations he has brought on the earth. (Ps 46:8)

I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things. (Isa 45:7)

Does God really create disaster? Surely not! Isn't he a God of love? So why does the Bible tell us that God creates disaster?

Justice as well as love is part of the nature of God, which the prophets of Israel recognised. But they also knew that God held the nations in his hands 'as a drop in a bucket', which was Isaiah's description (Isa 40:15). Isaiah said that God "brings princes to nought and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing" (Isa 40:23). In other words, God is completely in control – everything that happens, he either allows or initiates.

Our Acknowledgement Aside!

The same is true of our individual lives, even if we don't acknowledge his sovereignty. Cyrus, the Persian ruler, had no knowledge of God but God used him to overthrow the Babylonian Empire and allow the captive Jews to go back to the land of Israel to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. God actually called Cyrus his 'anointed one'! He said "I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honour, though you do not acknowledge me" (Isa 45:4).

Understanding the 'sovereignty of God' is of immense importance if we are to know what God is doing today and if we wish to pray with wisdom about what's happening, not only in our individual lives but also in our nation. Understanding God's purposes and how he is working out those purposes in the contemporary world situation is of great importance.

God is completely in control – everything that happens, he either allows or initiates.

Asking for God's Guidance

Prayer changes things. And when many Christians combine to pray about what's happening, they can actually influence the course of history. This has happened recently in Britain on two occasions: the Scottish Referendum, where a huge amount of prayer called upon the Lord to save the British Union; and the June Referendum on our membership of the European Union, which was preceded by prolonged prayer both by individuals and by a large number of gatherings of Christians. They called upon the Lord to guide the nation to the right decision.

Even some politicians who wanted Britain to remain in the European Union, such as our new Prime Minister Theresa May, are now recognising that a new dawn is opening up before the nation, that could lead to a time of unprecedented prosperity and blessing. But this will only occur if we truly seek the ways of righteousness and truth.
The same could happen in America if the American people surround the nation in prayer so that God can work out his purposes.

Praying Wisely

God can work out his purposes one way or another; even if he has to allow what appears to be a disaster. God often has to use disasters in our personal lives or in the life of a nation in order to bless us – to turn us from the wrong path, to change our hearts or to give us a deeper experience of his grace!

This is why it is so important for Christians to pray in the right way – asking the Lord to guide them in placing their vote – not according to party allegiance or personal prejudice. The right prayer is to ask the Lord that his will be done. Then, whatever the outcome, God will work out his purposes for good, and not for evil.

When many Christians combine to pray, they can change the course of history.

Whatever happens in America affects the rest of the world, especially Britain with its historic ties. We urge our readers to pray for America: pray that God will guide America's believing Christians who feel alienated from both candidates and show them how to use their vote.

Why Trump?

One American's perspective.

I was walking through a supermarket here, in St Louis, Missouri, the other day and enjoyed a brief but lively conversation with a young British woman hailing from the south of England. After the appropriate pleasantries and remarks of introduction had been exchanged, we began to touch on the cultural and political differences between the US and the UK. Her first direct question to me was, "What I want to know is, how could anyone vote for Donald Trump?"

Seven months out from one of the most pivotal presidential elections ever presented before the American people, along with phrases like 'border control', 'race war' and 'immigration', the name 'Donald Trump' elicits a response from almost everyone -- from the savviest of political insiders to the trend-obsessed 18-year old deciding whether or not to vote for the first time.

Everyone believes they have a position but, feet held to the fire, very few of us would boast that our position has been thought through with objectivity and seasoned personal conviction, and is based on facts.

Pushing Beneath the Surface

Let me be clear right out of hand. I am not necessarily a supporter of Mr Trump. As a matter of 'fact', I am not yet sure who I wish to support in this election. For me it will take time, study and prayer for God's leadership in order to decide who is to become the next President of the United States of America.

The name 'Donald Trump' elicits a response from almost everyone - but who of us would boast that our position has been properly thought through?

At first blush there are many things about Mr Trump, in particular, which are startling to the American (let alone the British!) sensibility – his arrogance, his appearance, his personal convictions (it is he who declared he has never had to ask God's forgiveness for anything he has done), his boorish demeanor, the seeming unending litany of bullying actions and impolitic comments that are (and always have been, where Trump is concerned) the source of unending fuel that fires the media.

However, after taking the time to push beyond the surface I believe I can pinpoint a few of the reasons why so many Americans are seriously backing Donald Trump.

Hope for the American Dream

Trump remembers when our people moved forward as a nation, each generation in the hope of a free, independent and productive future. And he declares that we can be that way again.

His grandfather was a European immigrant who was a successful businessman. His father was a man whose hard work and tenacity earned him audience with America's elite and enabled him to establish a name in the development of real estate and construction. Since birth, Donald Trump has been trained to operate at the pinnacle of American society.

For many, Trump personifies the American Dream. For many, Trump personifies the American Dream.

Now, as the country that enabled his father to amass a personal fortune exceeding one quarter of a billion dollars by the time of his death reels from the impact of Obama's change without hope, Donald Trump decides to submit his credentials as an outside candidate to fill the highest post in the land.

Almost every citizen over the age of 40 in this country has equated the 'American Dream' (the idea that the hard-working, self-made man who, on the strength of his own tenacity, elbow-grease and determination to succeed, can supersede class and station despite all odds to create whatever legacy he chooses for himself and his family) to the pinnacle of personal freedom. Many of us have spent our lives trying to achieve this dream, passing its well-proven formula down to our children and grandchildren. However, most of us have found it to be harder than we thought, and have fallen short of our goals.

However, Mr Trump, to all intents and purposes, has lived the elusive 'American Dream'. Because of that, many US citizens find his person and his success enviable. Even if they don't agree with Trump's personal philosophies, they cannot deny his prowess in every field of endeavour. As a private businessman and public figure, Trump personally has enough clout - both fiscally and dynastically - to make it difficult for even the most seasoned power brokers to erase him from the canvas of public opinion.

Trump, to all intents and purposes, has lived the elusive 'American Dream'. Many US citizens find his person and his success enviable.

Sensationalism and Status

Trump's carefully crafted celebrity status both stimulates and threatens his ability to be taken seriously as a contender for the presidency. No matter how expensive the suit, his 'reality television' persona does not scream 'statesman'.

However, Mr Trump has brokered difficult business transactions, worked alongside lobbyists and politicians, pledged and followed through with open support for candidates from whichever side best championed his interests. He has hired and fired thousands of people, both Americans and immigrants. He has manipulated his public image to the point that, for twenty years, his personality has been as recognisable as that of the most highly paid celebrity or influential cultural icon in the world.

I believe it safe to say that Trump is not now, nor has he ever been, a stupid man.

It is easy, therefore, to believe in and support any man with his track record who says that, if he is elected, he will do all within his power to resurrect our national security, regain the confidence of our allies, empower our military and honour our veterans, improve and individualise the education our children receive, allow us to continue to protect ourselves, bring a return of free speech, support our elderly and sideline religious persecution.

Not an Establishment Man

Unlike every other candidate I, in my lifetime, have seen ascend to the point of being a contender for nomination by their representative party, Donald Trump is not the progeny of that small circle of mostly inter-connected American political elite. He has bought and paid for his own campaign with his own dollars. For better or worse, he is not concerned with pleasantries and platitudes.

Mind you, regardless of the appeal (or not) of his manner, Trump is not a 'clean' man. Although he says he is a Christian, from the 'fruits of his labours' I believe it to be a safe assumption that he, like most people, is perhaps speaking in reference more to his family tradition than to an active, living and breathing faith in Jesus Christ as his Saviour. It is a matter of public record that he vacillates in this regard. No doubt, Trump, like most people, will say whatever he needs to say, do whatever he thinks he must do, to protect and/or further his own best interests.

In my lifetime I have been unexpectedly blessed to spend a great deal of time in and around those who wield substantial influence in our nation – its business, politics and entertainment. It has been my observation that business and politics walk hand in hand in every nation on earth. There are players and there are watchers. Each country has its own system for getting things done, and those who learn how to manipulate that system receive the benefits thereof. No system devised by man is clean. The only difference I see between the outright misdeeds of Donald Trump and those of any other seasoned, career politician is that the career politician does things more quietly.

This is not said to justify his past and/or present behaviours. It is said to invite balance against the meteoric sensationalism that surrounds this man in contrast with his political opponents.

The only difference between the outright misdeeds of Donald Trump and those of any other seasoned, career politician is that the career politician does things more quietly.

The Quality of His Enemies

Ever since Trump began to tell the American people that the values, traditions and freedoms by which they have lived for generations may yet be restored he has gained a wide range of increasingly powerful enemies, from grassroots organisations to international politics and business. To make any attempt to list his detractors would do precious little for anyone's digestion or be a profitable use of time, so I will attempt to hit only the most recent highlights of adversarial activity.

  • The turning of the Republican (conservative) party, the very party he seeks to represent, against him within recent weeks is unprecedented in the annals of American politics.
  • The media increasingly twists many of his statements past the point of reason, creating confusion around every aspect of his person and his campaign, ignoring any attempt at journalistic integrity.
  • Grassroots opponents, many of whom are paid protesters, endeavour to spark physical altercations at his rallies, block access to the buildings where he is campaigning, and threaten his supporters with physical harm for simply coming to hear him speak.

Who is being accused - Trump, or the 'silent majority' he purportedly represents?Who is being accused - Trump, or the 'silent majority' he purportedly represents?

The media would have us believe that, from the outside looking in, Trump's candidacy would inspire chaos, hatred, and despair as Trump, the new Hitler, would make America his footstool.

War on Who?

But it appears that the more dissension and disaffection is aimed at Donald Trump, the more support he seems to gain from the people. Why? Could it be that the war being waged against Trump and all he says he stands for is not, in reality, against the man, himself, but against those who support him?

Is it possible that, at its root, this is a war against the people?

We, The People (of God)

We who are followers of Christ understand that God positions leaders into the nations as he wills, so for the United States, at this juncture, Donald Trump may or may not be the man for the hour.

Either he is who he says he is and believes what he declares he believes, and God may choose to use him in the fight to return some level of balance and stability to our nation for a few years more – or Trump is following the money, having brokered a 'deal' with those who would collapse this, the last great unique government in the world – a deal which, in return for playing ball, would ensure him a seat on the board of the world corporation.

The election of any national leader is critical not only to their native peoples, but to governments across the globe; and we, as sons and daughters of the living God, are obligated - by the mandate of Christ - to be involved with one another on such level that the glory of God may be revealed to and through our nations. If we are allowed the privilege of a vote, we really should use it.

However, it is often disheartening to come away from a voting booth feeling as though we have simply chosen the candidate who we think will do the least damage during his/her tenure. We long for Godly men and women to step up, but seldom does either the US or the UK see that happen.

As sons and daughters of the living God, we are mandated to live such that the glory of God may be revealed to and through our nations. We must broaden our perspective.

Both the US and the UK represent great hinge points of leadership in the world. As citizens, we each represent a microcosm of our respective nations. I believe each one of us must broaden our perspective. As God's people, we must begin to see past the screen on the television, past the cultural borders of our nations, and unite in a more collective mindset. We must pray for one another's candidates, leaders and nations, if we are to become vessels for the wisdom and courage to stand for Jesus Christ.

The Power of Prayer

Clifford Hill reflects on the General Election result and the power of the prayers of the elect...

Christians of all traditions united to pray for the nation in the run-up to the General Election. There was great fear that the country was going to be plunged into chaos. The polls all predicted no clear winner; so it looked as though there was going to be some kind of coalition, or government by a minority-administration securing its legislation on a vote by vote basis: doing deals with minority groups in the Commons and living with daily uncertainty.

Chaos Expected

That daily uncertainty would have affected the whole nation, especially in the economy. Foreign investors would have had no confidence in Britain's ability to meet its normal business agreements and no doubt the pound would have suffered on the currency market. There would have been great instability on the Stock Exchange which would have had a strongly negative effect upon the nation's economy. There was additional fear of a Labour/SNP partnership in government with unknown consequences that might have torn the Union apart.

Urgent Prayer

Prayer meetings were held in churches, halls, and home-groups right across the land as Christians responded to the sense of urgency concerning the state of the nation. There was widespread recognition that the nation thoroughly deserved the judgement of God and that the kind of chaos which was envisaged was justified.

Christians around the nation responded with repentance and prayer, knowing that God holds the church responsible for the spiritual state of the nation."

Christians also recognised that the disunity and weak witness of the church was largely responsible for the moral and spiritual state of the nation. So there was a lot of repentance among the prayers. Christians know that God holds the church responsible for the spiritual health of the nation and the lack of unity undermines the presentation of a clear message.

Destroying Foundations

There is a verse in Psalm 11 which says "When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?" But the Hebrew literally says, "What have the righteous done?" This significantly alters the meaning of the question and it indicates the way God holds those who know his word responsible for the state of the nation. When secular/humanist forces are destroying the foundations of the nation, God says to those who know him and are listening to him, "What have you done whilst all this destruction has been going on?"

Whilst the nation's foundations are being destroyed, God says to those who know him: 'what have you done whilst all this has been going on?'"

We have to ask ourselves what we in the church were doing when our Parliament made major decisions that affected the life of the nation. Was there a strong and powerful voice representing the word of God when the decision was made to invade Iraq, or to bomb Libya, or to 'redefine marriage' which weakened family life, part of the nation's very foundation?

Each of these decisions has had enormous consequences, both for Britain and on the world scene. Our invasion of Iraq has had tragic consequences that have led to the formation of the Islamic State and the slaughter of thousands of Christians, Yehadis and Sunni Muslims. The bombing of Libya has left that nation without a stable government, which has led to thousands of migrants from around Africa and the Middle East dying in attempts to reach Europe from the shores of Libya, where people traffickers operate with unregulated freedom.

Prayers Answered

The foundations of our nation and many others have been shaken by the decisions of politicians throughout the past century of human conflict and bloodshed. But the prayers of a multitude of Christians across the land for a stable Government have certainly been answered. The question now is; what will a Conservative Government do with the five years entrusted to them and will the Scots be content with the strong voice in Westminster they have achieved? These are big questions upon which the future of the nation depends.

What of the Future?

Will the new Government not only care about the economy – steering the nation towards greater prosperity – but also care for the poor and the powerless? Will their tax reforms favour the rich: and will they use their Parliamentary majority to bring in boundary reforms that ensure their own powerbase in future elections, ignoring the gross injustice of a voting system that left nearly four million UKIP voters with only one Member of Parliament?

The prayers of a multitude of Christians across the land for a stable government have been answered. But now more than ever, prayer – and bold declaration of the truth – needs to continue!"

Christians who prayed for God's mercy upon the nation should not only continue praying for the Government but should be making their voice (and the word of God) heard in the places of political power in the land.

A Divided Nation Needs a United Church

Political change cannot provide solutions for society's deepest need: in the wake of the General Election it is time for Christians to unite to transform our nation...

The result of the 2015 General Election has meant relief for some and grief for others, but surprise for nearly all. One prediction came true: the SNP landslide. Will Scotland seek a further referendum on independence? Nicola Sturgeon says no, but if she does not gain what she wants at Westminster, will she change her mind? Will English and Scottish politicians spend the next five years butting heads? Will the Union collapse?

Division is rife

Division is rife in our nation: politically between Scotland and England, economically between north and south and the haves and have-nots, and socially between black and white, male and female.

Greed and selfishness breed unhealthy competition and division. Those who cannot compete go under and growing numbers find themselves in a poverty trap. We blame the government for our social ills, but no government can solve them all. Only the gospel can change the selfishness in human hearts that causes division and suffering. Only the compassion of the Saviour can reach the depths of broken lives and only a revival can transform society.

The Wesleyan revival of the 18th century transformed areas of society that no politician could reach. Yet our national church did not champion their preaching but closed its pulpits to them, so that the Wesley brothers and their friend George Whitefield began to preach out of doors to the poor. Opposition to the revival continued in the Anglican Church and so Methodism as a separate denomination was born. Sadly, part of the legacy of the revival was division in the Church. The opportunity for a revival uniting people across class and political divides as one Body of believers was lost.

If we are to see revival in our nation, we must seek unity so that we do not limit the work of the Holy Spirit by our divisions."

A divided nation needs a united Church

Let true believers of every denomination unite under the manifesto of Jesus from Isaiah 61:

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour.

Cardinal Vincent Nicholls, leader of the Catholic Church in Britain, has pointed out that when Christians are persecuted, their persecutors do not ask what denomination they belong to or what, for example, is their theology of the Holy Spirit. They just see the people of the Cross. In the same way, the beggars Mother Teresa helped were unlikely to have questioned her orthodoxy: they simply saw her devotion to Christ.

The needs of our society cry out for Christians of all denominations to work together, sharing skills and resources, rather than insisting on promoting the work of our own churches and organisations, which leads to duplication of effort and inefficient use of assets.

That does not mean compromising core beliefs but discerning who are our real gospel partners: we must jealously guard the faith handed down to us by the apostles, and prioritise the saving work of the gospel at the centre of all mission and social action, otherwise we lose our distinctiveness (Matt 5:13).

Seeking unity does not mean compromising on core beliefs. It means discerning real partners in Christ and prioritising the saving work of the gospel."

How do we discern who our gospel partners are?

Christian unity must be based on our position "in Christ" (Gal 3:28), proceeding from his saving work and the ongoing work of his Spirit conforming us to his image (Rom 8:29).

The hallmark of true believers of every denomination is spiritual new birth (John 3:3), through which we become part of the Body of Christ:

there is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Eph 4:4-6)

Ephesians 4 also speaks of our "unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God", which grows as we are equipped and edified by the five-fold ministry (v11-13). This implies that our unity is built on the Word of God. May we work towards local leaders meeting together for study and prayer so that unity for ministry in our neighbourhoods is strong in both word and Spirit?

Bound together in love

Jesus did not say that our distinctiveness lies in identical doctrinal positions on all points, but in the love we have for one another (John 13:35). It is time for us to unite in love, to "put on love, which binds all virtues together in perfect unity" (Col 3:14) and to "make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" (Eph 4:3).

So let this "one body" work in unity across denominational boundaries to "bind up the broken-hearted" and "release the captives" (Isa 61). May we agree to disagree about our differences on matters of secondary importance and lift Jesus higher in our nation through servant-hearted gospel witness and social intervention?

A Self-Centred Nation

Clifford Hill reacts to the result of the General Election...

All the political pundits have been astonished by the result of the General Election. The polls predicted a very different picture with Labour and the Conservatives running neck-and-neck in England but significant gains for the minor parties.

None of this happened. The one place the pollsters got it right was in Scotland where even well-known Lib Dem and Labour political leaders were swept aside in a tsunami of nationalism.

The common factor

The one common factor between the result in England and that in Scotland is that the people have voted for their own self-interest. The Scottish National Party appealed not only to the tribal instinct of Scots but also to their own self-interest, pledging to be a force in Westminster that will ensure that a larger slice of the economic cake will go to Scotland and they will all be better off by having SNP members there to put Scotland first.

The one common factor between the result in England and that in Scotland is that the people have voted for their own self-interest."

South of the border, the Conservatives played the same economic card appealing to people's self-interest; that they will be better off by voting Conservative who are steering the nation towards more prosperous times. It was a message designed to appeal to those who are doing reasonably well and hope to do better.

The real losers

The losers in this election are the poor, the unemployed, the powerless - those who didn't even feel it was worthwhile voting. They knew that they would not get a larger slice of the cake - whoever triumphed at the polls. The millions who live in our inner-city areas and who exist on welfare, or scrape a living on a day-to-day basis with no job security: they are the forgotten multitude who live in ghettos of hopelessness and despair.

The real losers of this election are the poor, powerless and marginalised. What will happen to them now?"

What will happen to the poor and powerless as the nation enjoys increasing prosperity? The legacy of colonial slavery is still rampant among those from an African-Caribbean background, who still carry the names of their British plantation owners and are unable to trace their African roots. Will anyone in the new government stop and ask why there are more young black men in prison in Britain than in university?

Will anyone care for those who still suffer from the legacy of industrial exploitation leftover from the Industrial Revolution and the dark times of 19th century Britain? Will anything be done to change the culture of despair that engulfs whole communities in our big cities?

Deep-rooted problems

One thing is certain: if nothing is done; if no-one cares, deep-rooted sense of injustice and frustration will boil over once again, as they did in the riots that began in Tottenham in August 2011 and spilled over into other parts of London and Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol and other cities.

This is the word of the Lord to prosperous Britain- it is the word that Jeremiah gave to the city of Jerusalem at a time of prosperity when the word of God was ignored (Jer 7:4-8):

If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, if you do not opporess the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, in the land I gave to your forefathers for ever and ever. But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless."

Why No Clear Winner?

Why is it that on the day before the General Election, polls are showing that the main parties are still neck-and-neck after six weeks of campaigning? We are facing a highly uncertain future.

Judgement Day Approaches

The gulf between Scotland and England grows wider with another vote on independence almost certain and the breakup of the Union comes closer. A Referendum on Europe could leave England even more isolated. Great Britain would soon be reduced to 'Little England'.

The British Empire that covered half of the globe when our present Queen was born has disappeared in a single lifetime. The great Commonwealth of Nations over which she was crowned Queen is rapidly slipping into oblivion. Whilst we do not endorse all of Britain's colonial history, it is clear that the global power and influence once given to our nation is crumbling away. How could this happen? Why have the mighty fallen? We are certainly not blaming the Queen, who has shown great integrity and fortitude through one of the most difficult periods in world history.

Right and Wrong Rejected

There is a very simple answer to these questions. As a nation we have collectively turned our backs upon God. If you reject the basic principles of right and wrong, truth and falsehood, the foundations of the nation are destroyed. When the storm strikes, all the great institutions of state are shaken and crumble before our eyes.

Inevitable Consequences

When we reject the word of God the consequences are inevitable – chaos and confusion follow. This is what we expect will be the outcome of the general election. The word of God to Britain is this:

The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. (Deut 28:28)

A Good Outcome

But the Lord also promises good coming out of what appears to be disaster. Psalm 103 says,

The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who respect him.

From Disaster to Blessing

For at least the past 30 years God has been warning us that he is going to shake the nation and all the material things in which we've put our trust will come crumbling down. But God's purposes are always for our good, for blessing rather than judgement.

If the great shaking that is coming upon us causes us to recognise that we have turned away from truth and righteousness, the whole situation can change overnight."

This sounds impossible, but with God nothing is impossible. When our lives are open to him he pours out blessings that are beyond our wildest dreams. How will we respond when the storm strikes?

Democracy or Theocracy? You Decide...

With only days to go to the General Election many Christians are still undecided voters. Clifford Denton offers some biblical thoughts on choosing where to place your vote.

There is no such thing as democracy in the Bible. What the Bible offers is theocracy, where God guides the affairs of the nation. Democracy is rooted in Greek philosophy. At best it involves an entire nation deciding who will govern. At worst it appears to give choice, but the choice is limited by what’s on offer, and often leads to weak leaders – puppets of the system.

Democracy in our day is far from a seeking after biblical truth and is usually rooted in humanism, with multi-faith overtones- as when political leaders visit Sikh or Hindu temples, taking off their shoes and bowing to their altars in an attempt to win votes. But which god are they serving?

There is no such thing as democracy in the Bible. What the Bible offers is a THEOCRACY."

Nigel Farage claims, “Sadly, I think UKIP is the only major political party left in Britain that still cherishes our Judaeo-Christian heritage. I believe other parties have deliberately marginalised our nation’s faith, whereas we take Christian values and traditions into consideration when making policy.1 But is this simply an election ploy?

What Does the Word ‘Election’ Mean?

The word election has a special meaning in the Bible. It means ‘choice’– God’s choice of a person or a nation who can fulfil a special role in working out God’s purposes. King David was elected by God as an ideal leader. He was a man of prayer who sought guidance from God before making decisions. The Hebrew word for election is bahar and the Greek is eklegomai. Both of them have the basic biblical meaning of choosing. In an election we should be seeking men or women of God’s choosing.

Choices

When Almighty God created mankind He gave us the ability to choose. How do we exercise choice and on what principles? He chooses us and we choose him through an interactive process beginning with God. This is the bottom line for all that God intends in the world today and the world to come.

Choice, in God's terms, is focussed and clear. He invites people of all nations to choose him as Lord and King"

This should be top of the agenda for our national elections, but is far from being so. Choice, in God’s terms, is focussed and clear. He invites people of all nations to choose him as Lord and King and to ask him how to best live as individuals, communities and nations.

How precise is this? It took the Lord Jesus a whole night of prayer before he chose his first 12 disciples. This was not a vague choice on vague, ill-defined democratic principles. This was a personal and careful choice for an eternal purpose.

Serving a Kingdom not of this World

Christians look for biblical principles in the potential leaders of our country. Our choices should reflect Kingdom principles. We sometimes feel alien in trying to do this. What will our nation choose from the selection on offer? Does the choice meet the deep principles and deep needs of the nation?

Even nations like the UK and the USA, once chosen for blessing by Almighty God, are far from seeking to follow him today. The result is weak and unblessed leadership in a world that is “doing what is right in its own eyes”, as Israel did in the times of the Judges when there was no godly national leadership.

Choose this Day Whom You Will Serve

God’s priority for our national election is that we choose to return to him. This is a day as significant for Britain as when Joshua led the Children of Israel over the Jordan (Josh 24:14-15), saying:

Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshipped beyond the River in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve...as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."

Where is the leader today with the rallying cry to turn our nation to the Lord – not just to be seen on public election platforms? That cry should be heard coming from prominent leaders in the Church giving guidance to our political leaders who are weak and confused, falling over each other to make promises that they know they cannot fulfil – anything to attract votes.

It is Not Too Late to Seek God

It is not too late, even now, to seek the Lord for what he is asking of our nation. If we desire that God chooses us for blessing then we must choose him – to serve him wholeheartedly as our King.

If we desire that God chooses us for blessing, then we must choose to serve him as our King!"

Where is the politician who will stand up for God’s ways above all else? Let him stand up, let us hear a rallying cry across our nation and let us choose the ways of God once more. Then we will find the path of recovery that we all desire in our hearts. That must be our priority or we will suffer the consequences of the current more superficial priorities with which we are presented.

In elections throughout the Western nations, the trend is to move away from the ways of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob into religious and political compromise. The call on believers is always to choose to follow God rather than man. How will we do this on 7 May?

Winds of Change

Revolutionary winds of change are beginning to blow across Europe. CLIFFORD HILL asks: Are we heading for a new social revolution?

There is a groundswell of protest from ordinary people who are fed up with politicians who have held a stranglehold on power for decades. New political movements are spawning and growing fast. People are tired of the political establishment and are looking for alternatives - any alternative!

In Greece a protest party came from nothing in a little over five years and are now ruling the nation. Could a similar thing happen in Britain? Could UKIP, SNP and the Greens break the stranglehold of the two-party system that has ruled Britain for 100 years? People are looking for change.

Grassroots Unrest

The social unrest at the grassroots has been sparked by unemployment, the credit crunch, austerity measures; and the corruption, lies and deceit that are being exposed among politicians. People no longer trust their leaders.

But there is something deeper going on, similar to a kind of ‘Peasants’ Revolt’ spreading across Europe. Widespread immigration has led to rapid cultural change. On 15 April this year it was reported that 8,000 migrants had crossed the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy in the past week, some of whom will no doubt head for Britain. Such influxes often lead to fear that precious social heritages are being lost. At the same time freedom of speech is being strangled by so-called Equality Laws. But the challenge to the political establishment from the grassroots is beginning to impact political and cultural leaders as demonstrated in two significant events.

Unrest from the top down

Two significant events have occurred in the past month that may signal change from the top down as well as from the grassroots up!

The first is a resolution passed by the Council Assembly of the European Parliament entitled "Tackling intolerance and discrimination in Europe with a special focus on Christians". Its object is to draw attention to the fact that the "expression of faith is sometimes unduly limited by national legislation and policies which do not allow the accommodation of religious beliefs and practices”. In plain language – we are losing our freedom of speech! Christians can’t talk about their faith for fear of offending someone and losing their job! Most significantly, the resolution calls for member states to “uphold freedom of conscience in the workplace” (Section 6.2.2).

It is in the workplace where many Christians have fallen foul of British equality laws. There have been reports of Christians being entrapped by hostile colleagues who ask questions or pretend to want advice or prayer and then complain to the authorities that they have been offended. Many Christians have lost their jobs and reports of these dubious practices created by the equality laws have been highlighted in the press and have outraged public opinion. At last, the European Parliament is getting the message! The so-called “tolerant society” has become a monster of intolerance!

"It is in the workplace where many Christians have fallen foul of British equality laws. But at last, the European Parliament is getting the message!"

The second significant event is the action of Trevor Phillips, the former Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality. He has made a groundbreaking exposure of the multicultural mess that exists in Britain created by the social engineering of idealistic politicians pursuing Utopian dreams based upon their secular humanist principles which ride roughshod over centuries of Judaeo-Christian tradition.

The Racket of Multiculturalism

Trevor Phillips has attacked what he calls the ‘racket of multiculturalism’ sparked during the Blair Government era, that led to the silencing of debate on racial issues and the intimidation of anyone who dared to question the action of those in authority in society. The so-called ‘hate’ and ‘equality’ laws have been responsible for enormous harm in our national life.

"The 'racket of multiculturalism' has led to the silencing of debate on racial issues and the intimidation of anyone who dares question the action of those in authority."

Thousands of girls in Rochdale, Rotherham, Oxford and other cities have had their lives ruined by gangs of Pakistani men who have systematically groomed and sexually abused them. Although many people in authority in the so-called 'caring professions' as well as the police were aware of this abuse, they were afraid to speak out in case they were accused of being racist or Islamophobic or some other modern invention of secular sin.

The height of stupidity in our multicultural mess was surely when the actor Benedict Cumberbatch was immersed in a barrage of criticism for using the word 'coloured' instead of 'black' when making an important point about the lack of employment opportunities for young people.

Election Challenge

Now is the time to challenge politicians and would-be politicians in the run-up to the General Election. We have the chance to put on the political agenda all these issues that affect our freedom of speech.

Christians should be taking every opportunity of raising these issues in local newspapers, in hustings, on chat shows, local radio and social media. It is not enough to say “a plague on all your houses!” to the politicians; we have to make the voice of sanity heard in the nation or we will lose our freedom of speech forever.

Build Houses!

'Build houses!' That is the cry of politicians today in the run-up to the General Election. Each of the political parties is pledging to build more houses. But why the sudden rush?

The Conservative Party said they would build 100,000 new houses, so the Labour Party said they will build 200,000 houses and the Lib Dems capped them all by saying that they will build 300,000 new houses.1 Why is all this rush to build more houses?

None of the politicians like to admit it, but there are two reasons why we need so many new houses. The first is family breakdown; and the second is immigration.

Politicians don’t like speaking about either of these issues. But it is a plain statement of truth. 450 children in every 1000 suffer the traumatic experience of family breakdown before they leave school.2 Every family that splits creates the demand for more houses.

Wise Advice

This is just a little glimpse of the huge social problems in our nation today. But the demand for more houses is not new. “Build houses! This was the first piece of advice sent to the people who had been captured in Jerusalem and taken to Babylon in 596 BC. The people were utterly depressed and saw no hope for the future. They were forced to live in a hostile environment where they had nothing in common with their neighbours – they didn’t even speak the same language or worship the same God.

The prophet Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles saying:

Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. (Jer 29:5-6)

This was wise advice because the little community in Babylon could very quickly have been wiped out. Jeremiah wanted to see a strong and vibrant community of people, whose faith would not only survive the testing times in which they lived but would grow and mature. He foresaw the time when the faith of these people would be so attractive that their neighbours would want to embrace it. In the words of Isaiah they would become “a light for the Gentiles” (Isa 42:6).

Change of Attitude

For this to happen, the exiles in Babylon had to change their attitude towards their neighbours and the city where they were now living. Jeremiah’s letter also told them that God’s word to them was:

Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper. (Jer 29:7)

Jeremiah knew that the people would hate to hear this message so he added by way of emphasis, “Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel says” (Jer 29:8).

Learning to Prosper

In Britain today we are not facing the brutal opposition the Jews faced in Babylon. But Christianity is no longer the religion of the whole nation and the church no longer has a privileged position. We have to learn to be careful how we express our faith and not to provoke unnecessary opposition. The older generation of Christians need to heed the advice of Jeremiah to the exiles: to learn to prosper in a changed social environment.

In particular, older Christians have to learn how to support their children and grandchildren who live and work and study alongside others who have no knowledge of the Christian faith and who do not share the same values.

Building Households of Faith

Mature Christians have to build houses: but not with bricks and mortar. It is households of faith (Gal 6:10) that are needed – households where there is love and security for all members of the family, especially the young ones who may be the only Christian child in their school class. These children have to learn how to be different but still maintain friends. It is not easy for them and they need much tender loving care.

"Those who build 'households of faith' are the greatest asset to this nation today"

Praying, caring parents and grandparents who build houses, ‘households of faith’ for the whole family, are the greatest asset in the nation today. They are the house-builders who will provide ‘a hope and a future (Jer 29:11) for the next generation.
