  • Attempt to decriminalise abortion fails: Two pro-abortion amendments to the Domestic Abuse bill have failed – one was not selected for debate and the other was withdrawn. Read more here.   • High Court vindicates Christian adoption charity: Cornerstone may continue to recruit only evangelical Christian carers, after Ofsted attempted to force the agency to drop its religious ethos. Read more here and here.
  • Authors and academics champion free speech: Over 150 leading writers and thinkers, from JK Rowling to Stephen Pinker, have signed an open letter rejecting the UK’s growing culture of censorship and calling for a defence of the free exchange of ideas. Read more here.

  • Stephen Cottrell becomes Archbishop of York: The former Bishop of Chelmsford assumed his new role in an hour-long Zoom service on Thursday, taking over from John Sentamu. Read more here.
  • Scottish churches to re-open on 15 July: Previously the Scottish Government had said that churches would have to wait until 23 July but rowed back on their position following criticism that pubs could open earlier. Read more here.

World Scene

  • Trump notifies UN of withdrawal from WHO: A formal notification of the US’s intent to withdraw has been issued to the United Nations. However, the exit would not happen until 2021, meaning that it remains dependent on the outcome of the upcoming US Presidential election. Read more here.
  • Evangelical becomes President of Malawi: Lazarus Chakwera, who previously chaired the Assemblies of God School of Theology in Malawi, won Malawi’s presidential election with 58% of the vote. Read more here.

Israel & Middle East

  • Iran and Syria sign military agreement: The two nations are strengthening their military co-operation and Iran will be helping Syria improve its air defence systems. Read more here.
