- 2.3 million flee Venezuela, most malnourished: 7% of the country’s population have fled to surrounding nations in South/Central America since June, seeking to escape a dire economic situation including severe food shortages. Read more here.
- US relations with Turkey deteriorate: The Trump administration has temporarily blocked Turkey from receiving 100 F-35 fighter jets and has doubled the aluminium and steel tariffs imposed on the Middle East nation which have already caused the lira to crash. - Number of wildfires active in USA tops 100: As the blazes devastate parts of America’s west coast, several north-eastern states have been experiencing ‘historic’ levels of torrential rainfall, causing severe flooding. - US seeking to withhold $200 million more from PA: The proposed funding cut, which is additional to the $65 million cut from UNWRA, is intended to strengthen the US’s negotiating hand ahead of revealing the long-awaited Middle East peace plan. - Israel confiscates tens of thousands of balloons bound for Gaza: At Ashdod, three shipping containers of balloons were confiscated in a bid to prevent incendiary devices being manufactured. Border protests continue but rocket fire has lessened. Meetings are reportedly being held in Egypt to discuss the possibility of a long-term ceasefire. Read more here.
- Russia begins patrolling Golan de-militarised zone: Russia says its presence in the zone between Israel and Syria will help UN peace-keepers to become re-established. Commentators say it highlights Putin’s regional power. Read more here.
