The idea of a group of people pushing for a One World Government has often been considered a conspiracy theory. There are ideas out there currently that a group of elites have fabricated this current pandemic in order to create the conditions necessary for such a radical move. There have been calls for a global government to tackle the crisis, not least by former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.1
There are certainly some facts which would seem to back up this idea. There are many respected doctors and epidemiologists who question whether the severity of this disease merits the extraordinary lengths taken to combat it, and who say that these measures have meant that “a great evil has been perpetrated on the world” (Dr Sucharit Bhakdi). According to former Tory leader, Lord Hague, lockdown has been "a disaster for our society".2
There has been a global attempt to call for a much more nuanced response, in the form of the Great Barrington Declaration3. Yet despite being signed by thousands of medics and public health scientists, not to mention hundreds of thousands of members of the public, this significant petition has been dismissed.
Anti-vaxx movement
Hopes have been pinned on finding a vaccine. But even if one is used, it may be resisted by much of the population, as the testing process has been rushed through. Would it be enforced on the population? As yet, this has not been suggested. Even if there is a good voluntary uptake, the risks of using it, in the form of adverse side-effects, could give an impetus to the ‘anti-vaxx’ movement, which has been undermining the use of tried and tested vaccines that have saved many lives over the years.
Truth of God’s word
What do we know for sure? First, we can know what the Bible has said. Revelation 13:7 talks of the ‘beast’ who will be “given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.”
Verses 16 and 17 talk of a second beast who “also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.”
Revelation 17:17 says, “For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority, until God’s words are fulfilled.”
So the words of the Bible are clear that something along these lines will come about.
The Great Reset
Second, we can know what has been clearly stated. At least two major organisations are very clear in their intent to bring together the nations in ways that will entirely change systems.
The World Economic Forum4, an influential group of wealthy business leaders and some national leaders, stated at the beginning of the year that their aim was ‘The Great Reset’. It can also be seen from the opening page of their web site that Covid-19 is now a major factor in their reasoning for a complete change to the systems of the world, where they call for ‘urgent action for global stakeholders to cooperate in simultaneously managing the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis.’
The United Nations has been clear in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that it is looking at a new world financial system5. The technology is already available for a cashless, electronic financial system – and people are voluntarily giving up their use of cash to avoid touching money which could be contaminated by Covid-19. (It is already possible to have chips inserted under the skin to control electronic devices.) The UN are also becoming more anti-religion, seeing religion as a barrier to gender equality, the right to abortion and other human rights (sexual freedom)6.
Good intentions – bad ideas
What I think we should be careful of is not to attribute evil intent to those who are declaring such policies. These organisations are being quite open about their intentions. These, in the main, are people who genuinely want to see the world as a better place. They want to fix the broken systems. That, of course, is not to say that their proposals are good ones. Revolutionaries often want to make the world a better place – but generally make things worse in doing so. More power is put in the hands of individuals who can misuse it. Think of the atrocities and problems of communism, or of revolutionary France, where perceived enemies of the changes were executed.
Faithful to the Lord
At the end of the day there is clearly a conspiracy afoot. Revelation 13:2 states that “The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.” The dragon symbolises Satan. If this pandemic is used to set up a world government, it will be Satan who will be conspiring to make use of it.
This is an area we need to watch. The one world government, when it comes, will not be sympathetic to true believers. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people (Rev 13:10). We need to declare the gospel while we are still able. These movements are coming together, along with many others prophesied in the Bible such as the political manoevrings in the Middle East7. It’s as if all the chess pieces are moving into place, ready for the events foretold.
