Crisis or Opportunity?

Turbulent days may be ahead – but all is not lost

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, unveiled his plan on Wednesday to save Britain from what he described as “one of the most severe recessions this country has ever seen”.1 It included plans to protect jobs, help younger workers and encourage spending to stimulate the economy with measures such as a VAT cut for leisure activities and a restaurant voucher scheme to encourage people to eat out and save the service industry from collapse.

Of course, all this comes at a price, increasing the national debt by astronomical amounts that will probably take the lifetime of our grandchildren to pay off! And where will all this money come from? It comes from the bankers, who will virtually own the nation by the time this pandemic is over. And at the top, most of our major banking groups are members of the World Economic Forum, which has made no secret of its aim to ‘reset’ the world’s economy and governance systems in the near future.

Prince Charles, in a recent speech commending their activities, referred to the so-called ‘Great Reset’, when all the world’s systems of government and finance will be brought under the control of avowed globalists. All of this brings us closer to the scenario outlined in the Book of Revelation, where a single global economic and political system is set up which controls everything, even what we buy and sell.

Prince Charles and the WEF have learnt a lesson that most believers would also do well to note: a great crisis is also a time of great opportunity, which can be used for either good or ill. In Britain, we should not underestimate the power and influence of the Bible-believing remnant that still exists in the nation today. The eschatological passages in Scripture enable us to understand the objectives of those who wish to set themselves up against God and seize power for their own plans, but we do not have to assume that all is lost, and the powers of darkness will prevail. They will only prevail if we remain silent and do nothing.

Examine Our Ways

Jeremiah spent 40 years warning the people of Jerusalem about the inevitability of judgment, unless they changed direction and sought help from God. His greatest complaint was that neither the religious nor the political leaders listened or paid any attention to the signs of the times. But when disaster happened and Jerusalem suffered destruction, Jeremiah’s band of believers, who were responsible for writing the book we know as ‘Lamentations’, showed an incredible resilience.

This is what they said: “Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins?” (Lam 3:38-39). They recognised that God had allowed disaster to come upon them not arbitrarily, or vindictively, but for good reason – because of the sins of the nation. That was taking the first positive step towards outlining a recovery.

Then they added a strong message setting out the way forward, Let us examine our ways and test them and let us return to the Lord (Lam 3:38-40).

If only we could hear such a call in Britain today! As we have written previously on Prophecy Today UK, all six of the sins of Jerusalem which caused God to remove his hand of protection from over the people (Jer 7) are replicated in modern Britain. Surely it is time to “Examine our ways and test them and return to the Lord”. But who will take the initiative?

We know that the politicians are not going to set up a public enquiry into the state of the nation; and we know that the bishops and other church leaders will not take such a public stand. But instead of bewailing the lack of leadership in the churches, the time has surely come for the Bible-believing remnant in Britain to arise and make their voice heard.

Time is Short

Millions of people are asking why the pandemic has happened – why are all the nations across the world being shaken by this plague? But, as we have said on Prophecy Today UK before, the coronavirus plague is only the curtain raiser. The really big shaking is only just starting: vast unemployment and social chaos created by jobless multitudes is going to cause untold hardship and social disruption. When people are hungry and in despair, they will take to the streets in mass demonstrations that could lead to social disorder and violence, or worse.

The greatest need today – before days of distress really hit the nation – is for the word of God to be heard once more – “let us examine our ways and turn to the Lord” – to give people the opportunity to turn back before it is too late. This is the reason why God has allowed the great shaking of the nations to take place: to wake people up, including those who are his own, because time is short.

The Bible-believing remnant must find ways of declaring the gospel in the nation, taking advantage of the present difficulties to witness to our friends and neighbours, our families and colleagues – working while it is still day (John 9:4). It can be done! – we have all the modern means of communication. What are we waiting for?
