Reshaping the Nation

The old adage “a week is a long time in politics” is now laughable, as the political scene changes day by day and hour by hour.

The reshaping of our political parties that is taking place in front of our eyes is so fast-moving and fundamental that it is no longer possible to define clearly what any of them believe, or aim to achieve in the future.

The Lib Dems have at least come clean and effectively shown that all their parliamentary manoeuvring in opposition to ‘no deal’ was a cover-up for what they really want which is to keep Britain locked into the European Union. They now shamelessly say that, if they were to win the next General Election and form the Government, they would promptly cancel the decision of the British public at the 2016 national referendum to leave the EU. And they claim to be the great upholders of democracy! How incredible that a party with a history of hundreds of years of standing for democratic principles, can simply walk away from the values that former Liberal statesmen devoted their lives to uphold.

Political Upheaval

But the Lib Dems are not the only ones tearing up the foundational principles of their party. The Brexit debate has also thrown an enormous spanner into the works of the Labour Party. The deputy leader, Tom Watson, is keen on doing the same as the Lib Dems but his view is very much at odds with Jeremy Corbyn, who has nailed his colours firmly to the fence and is trying to back both ‘leave’ and ‘remain’ in the hope of pleasing voters on both sides in the General Election which he very much wanted and now does not want!

What is happening in the Conservative Party defies belief. Every day the divisions appear wider and the future of the Party becomes more problematic. How much longer Boris Johnson can occupy 10 Downing Street no one knows. Every day brings a new twist to the saga. Will he or won’t he succeed in getting Britain out of the EU by 31 October? This question has already been compounded by legal challenges to the decision to prorogue Parliament, demands for its recall, pressures to reinstate the 21 Tory rebels, confusion over what we are offering to (and being offered by) Brussels, and a multitude of other issues.

The Brexit debate has caused tremendous upheaval amongst the established political parties.

Meanwhile, Mr Johnson goes on working for a deal with Europe and touring the country, visiting hospitals and factories, pursuing his pre-election campaign, while domestic issues escalate – the drugs cartels continue to recruit children across the country, knife crime takes more young lives, youth suicide and domestic violence increase. All the signs of a dysfunctional nation in line with a dysfunctional Parliament are screaming at us from every page of our newspapers and every report on TV and radio.

A Crisis Situation

When will we wake up? When will blind eyes and deaf ears be opened? Britain is sick, and is being torn asunder by division so deep that it is likened to the Civil War of 400 years ago. The polarisation of the ‘Leave – Remain’ division is growing deeper by the day. But the debate in the nation is no longer rational: it is rapidly descending into a shouting match that could lead to violence on the streets. The original issues have long been forgotten.

We are sleepwalking into an unparalleled disaster of which no one seems to be aware. It is a disaster largely created by our warring Parliament that is totally unfit to govern the country. But how did we get to this incredible state of confusion?

There is a very simple answer. We have abandoned the biblical foundations of the nation. We have torn up the word of God. We have rejected the values and principles that have held the nation steady for hundreds of years.

Jeremiah sounded the right note when he said: “Since they have rejected the word of the Lord, what kind of wisdom do they have?” (Jer 8:9). Once you reject the Bible as the basis of truth you lose the basic absolutes which are the determinants of moral behaviour. You lose the certainties that are the foundation stones of the nation and you are cast adrift on a sea of relativism where everyone makes up their own standards of behaviour according to what seems right or comfortable for them.

Once you reject the Bible as the basis of truth you lose the certainties that are the foundation stones of the nation.

The Spiritual Battle

We need to remind ourselves of the reason why it is right to leave the European Union. It is because we need to be free from the evil influences of a highly secularised globalist institution driven by atheist-humanist values of cultural Marxism that will lead not only to the destruction of our sovereignty, but of the final remnants of our Judaeo-Christian biblically-based heritage.

Our godless politicians have no understanding of the true nature of the fierce spiritual battle that is raging over Europe with its anti-Semitism and its anti-Christian forces of darkness determined to destroy every semblance of the God of Creation and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. That is what the battle is all about!!! No wonder there is such conflict in Parliament and such commotion on the streets! Sadly, those who lack spiritual wisdom have no understanding of the nature of the battle because it can only be understood through spiritual discernment, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:14.

Our godless politicians have no understanding of the true nature of the fierce spiritual battle that is raging over Europe.

The Shaking of Britain

What will it take to bring us to our senses?

The British character has been formed in times of hardship and danger in the face of Armadas and standing alone against the might of the Nazi army across the Channel. We have many times faced trials and tribulations, learning to stand on our own feet, to care for one another and to share with each other in times of hardship.

Older people in Britain remember the days of rationing that outlasted World War II. We had food coupons, clothing coupons, petrol coupons and all kinds of restrictions. But we learned to make do and mend, rather than expect everything new and easy. We were leaner and healthier in those days than we are today when we can fill our bellies with junk food, drink sugary drinks, and overindulge in anything.

The younger generation know nothing of these things which may be why most want to stay in the EU, fearing hard times. As unwelcome as it sounds, it may be that only a time of economic and social turmoil can bring the nation back to a place of humility and openness before God and the message of the gospel.
