Charles Gardner reviews ‘Whose Child? UK Abortion, A Gospel Matter’ by S. Nye (2021)

Britain’s own ‘Auschwitz’ – the evocative term the author uses to depict the appalling massacre of nine million innocents – is laid bare in all its tragic detail in this new book.

‘Whose Child? UK Abortion, A Gospel Matter’ is a must-read for all Christians and others who care about the terrible ongoing plight of the unborn.

The abomination of child sacrifice

The book is written by Sarah Nye, but no further details of the author are given, perhaps deliberately in view of the potentially aggressive backlash she could elicit with such a provocative message.

This is a shocking, though nevertheless highly reasoned and relatively dispassionate, exposé of what is undoubtedly one of the greatest injustices of our time.

Comparisons with Nazi Germany are justified by the propaganda used to convince society that victims of abortion are effectively sub-human – just as Hitler’s cronies considered the Jews.

Far from the pro-life argument drawing on emotions, as is often claimed, this work is based on solid scientific fact, in contrast to the arguments put forward by ‘pro-choice’ advocates.

Silent Church

'Whose Child?' is a thoroughly researched and well-written account, littered with horrendous statistics which don’t make for easy reading. After taking a quick glance at the book, my wife warned me that I would find it too technical. But in fact it’s very straightforward and practical.

While not seeking to belittle the desperate horrors faced by soldiers in World War 1, often with lifelong consequences, we learn that whereas infantrymen in the trenches had a 10% chance of being killed, a baby in the womb today has a 24% chance of being aborted. There is much more to shock you rigid, but the author’s clear purpose is to challenge individuals, Church and nation to take up this cause seriously and do something about it.

The author’s clear purpose is to challenge individuals, Church and nation to take up this cause seriously and do something about it.

Above all, the Church especially needs to repent for remaining largely silent while the effects of the 1967 Abortion Act brought ever-widening negative repercussions on our society. We are, in fact, under a curse as a nation for what has effectively become child sacrifice on a massive scale. The Bible makes it abundantly clear that slaughter of the innocent is an ‘abomination’ (Prov 6:16-18).

The author quotes an Evangelical Alliance survey which demonstrated that churchgoers more or less matched the world’s thinking on the issue (p.144). Nye fails to tell the reader, however, that the question asked in that survey – ‘Can abortion ever be justified?’ – was very vague, and the EA advise that it is unwise to interpret its findings in any detail.

The harm and the hope

We have allowed our children to be laid on the altar of our own comfort, career and sexual sin, and are paying a heavy price with the breakdown of stable family life and much else. The author exposes the lie of the ‘pro-choice’, ‘my body’ lobby, especially in view of the Bible’s assertion that our bodies are not our own (1 Cor 6:20).

The author has much to say about the harm done to women in the process – physically, psychologically, emotionally and spiritually – and points to the path of redemption and forgiveness for those who have faced up to the reality that an innocent life has been taken.

We have allowed our children to be laid on the altar of our own comfort, career and sexual sin, and are paying a heavy price with the breakdown of stable family life and much else.

Christianity is not here to condemn, but to challenge and offer resurrection and hope. The examples of Jonah (in the belly of the fish) and Jesus (in the dark tomb) point to life after death for those who repent and believe the gospel.

The author concludes by repeating what has apparently been said many times – that “our generation’s Auschwitz is in the womb of women. We are silent participants if we stand by and do nothing.”
