Paul Luckraft interviews author Mark Dunman, whose two books 'Has God Really Finished With Israel' and 'The Return of Jesus Christ' were reviewed in Prophecy Today last year.
One of the delights of reviewing books for Prophecy Today is encountering new authors that immediately impress through the quality of their writing and display a depth of thinking that makes even familiar topics come alive. For me, one of the highlights of 2015 was discovering the two books by Mark Dunman.
Consequently, I decided to meet the author and find out more about his background and what had influenced him. In particular I wanted to learn from him about the way God leads us into new ventures.
All I knew about Mark before I met him was that he was now retired after a career as a science teacher in Further Education. As such, he was not a minister, or a professional theologian, or a writer. So how was it that, in later life, he had turned his hand to writing and to tackling such challenging topics as Israel and the end times? What I discovered was both fascinating and encouraging.
Mark came from a home that did not believe in God, but by his twenties he was agnostic: "By my mid-twenties I wasn't anti-God, but as a scientist I felt I needed evidence that God was real and what the Bible said about Jesus was true." God subsequently provided this evidence in the form of Biblical prophecy and the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially the remarkable gift of praying in a language that had not been learnt.
By early 1974 he was ready to put faith into action and pray the sinner's prayer of repentance and accept Jesus into his life. The baptism in the Holy Spirit followed two weeks later. He says: "I was bowled over by the fact that I could pray fluently in a language I had not learnt, especially when I thought of the years I had taken to reach a reasonable fluency in French!"
Reading the scriptures convinced Mark there was a divine mind behind everything he already knew and experienced. Here was a God who made and kept covenants, who made plans and knew the future. Prophecy was a normal way for God to speak, and once he had spoken it would be fulfilled.
Reading the scriptures convinced Mark there was a divine mind behind everything he knew. Here was a God who made and kept covenants, who made plans and who knew the future.
All this would eventually shape Mark's views and inform his understanding, especially on the vital topics he would one day write about. The role of the Jewish people and the land of Israel in God's purposes today could not be ignored. Nor could the key doctrine of Christ's return and the trickier aspects of end time theology be relegated to secondary importance. God had made certain things clear and we needed to accept his whole word into our Christian faith.
Mark learnt quickly, thanks mainly to Bible teachers such as Derek Prince and good teaching in his church. He was realising the importance of truth and how it shapes our Christian lives. As he grew in the knowledge of God he developed a level of discernment that would prove useful later. Not everything he would read would strike him as true. Not all authors would impress him! But at this point it never occurred to him to join their ranks.
Although he was used to writing reports and papers within his teaching community, God had not yet called him to be a writer. For Mark, life at this time was what most people would regard as standard, revolving mainly around a family and a career. But God was waiting, biding his time and preparing his man.
All changed in the 1990s when Government plans for modernisation within Further Education brought innovations and the inevitable redundancies. Mark accepted, reluctantly at first, that this meant him, but he soon came to terms with it. God was calling him to something new. Looking back, it was a God-given chance to serve, to embrace fresh opportunities and to activate his faith in new areas.
Mark came to terms with redundancy as God calling him into something new. Looking back, it was a God-given chance to serve, embrace fresh opportunities and activate his faith in new areas.
At this time Mark started to delve more into the Old Testament and to think increasingly about Israel. As a result, a new realisation dawned. Previously he admits to believing that although Israel was important to God's purposes it was too important to entrust to the Church. As such, he thought the Jews constituted a separate work of God. He had simply not seen the link between the Church and Israel.
He now sought out an Israel prayer group and in 2003 he joined Watchmen for Israel, led by members of his Church. From this point Mark discovered a new heart for Israel as he began interceding for them. He describes one emotional prayer time which profoundly affected him. He now knew this was where part of his calling would lie.
His first attempt at writing in a Christian context was a pamphlet written on behalf of this prayer group, entitled Why pray for Israel and the Jewish people?. This gave him confidence that he could write as he done some years before as a professional teacher.
In 2007, Mark began to draft a fuller book to counter replacement theology. He had become more aware of this teaching and how it was widespread in the Church at large. The impetus was the publication of the Reverend Stephen Sizer's book Zion's Christian Soldiers with its embrace of replacement theology and its negative attitude towards Israel.
Mark discovered a new heart for Israel and knew that this was where part of his calling would lie – his first full book was drafted to counter replacement theology in the church.
So he started to write, producing a first draft, but then stopped. As he says, "I felt confident about the theology – I knew that replacement theology was wrong – but I realised that I was up against experienced writers and theologians and that I needed to learn more about the recent history of Israel. I needed to do more research."
It was some time before Mark returned to the book, but in May 2011 he started writing again, now better informed and qualified. By the end of the year the book was basically finished, but something was missing. Mark reminisces, "I needed a brief recent history of Israel without the opposing side simply dismissing it as partisan. The solution came with an unexpected trip to Israel. I returned with my opening chapter where I contrasted the opposing attitudes to Israel, before going on to make my theological case."
Mark had visited Israel for the first time in 2009 with a CFI group, but a second visit in 2012 provided some extra important experience and information. He spent 12 days there and met Palestinian Christians who lived in the West Bank. From this he began to gain a Palestinian perspective of life in Israel and the hardships they face. This is especially true of the small group of evangelical Christians in Gaza and the West Bank.
In June 2013, the book was published. Was this the start of a writing career? Mark wasn't looking for this but a second book did soon follow. The trigger for this was a conference where 'end time' teaching was on the agenda. Overhearing conversations, while Mark and his wife were promoting his Israel book at the stalls, he realised that there was much uncertainty about the end times, especially on subjects such as the Millennium, the Tribulation and the Rapture. He felt he needed to clarify his own ideas and perhaps help other people to do so as well. A second book would be the answer!
Now experienced, he knew what he needed to do first – thorough research! From November 2013 to June 2015 Mark did just that, the result being a book which provided a comprehensive overview where different views are not condemned but held in tension, while certain aspects are strongly advocated as being more biblically justified. Mark knew what he needed to say, and how to say it.
Will he write more? At this stage he doesn't know. He has learnt that as an author, two books are better than one. You find it easier to publicise and sell. You are more likely to be noticed. However, he will only write a third book if God clearly leads.
His advice for anyone wanting to write is: do your research, and make it as good as you can. If you have just one (or two) books in you then make them special. Make each page worthwhile and each word telling. Be prepared to take time, and to stop when necessary to wait for God's special revelation and timing.
Do you have a book or two in you? Mark's advice is to make them as good as you can – make each page worthwhile and every word telling. Be prepared to take time and let God lead.
What does Mark feel God is saying through the books he has written and the experiences this has involved? For him, writing is about bringing people back to the word of God: "while the days become spiritually darker it is essential for Christians to stay close to God's word and to trust him in their daily lives. It will be increasingly important for Christians to avoid deception. Belonging to a valid church with good teaching is one of the best insurances and one doesn't have to be in agreement with them on every doctrinal issue!"
He also believes that we can all expect God to use us. Even in later life, he will open new doors - though our previous experiences and skills are never wasted. On our part, we need to be wholehearted and willing to seek help from others. He would also recommend getting involved in praying for something, such as Israel, where God can touch your heart. This can easily provide the catalyst for new ventures.
We hope you've found Mark's story inspiring and encouraging. What new surprises has God in store for you?
'Almost Midnight' by Richard Thompson (New Wine Press, 2008, 255 pages, available from Amazon for £9.99)
The basis of this book is an extensive examination of Luke 21:24 and the "much-misunderstood period which Jesus called 'the times of the Gentiles', and the main issues associated with it" (p9). Its chief message is how this period of punishment for the Jewish people (trampled on by the Gentiles) should be measured and how it is being implemented by God. Its underlying theme is therefore the role of Israel within God's end time scenario. Here is a fascinating study into the relationship between God's ancient people and the events still to come in 'the last days'.
This is not a book for the novice and is best seen as a more detailed analysis for those already well-informed about the basics of end time ideas and who are prepared to look again at Biblical chronology within Old Testament prophecies and the end time portions of the New Testament. It is a fairly complex book, at times rather crowded, with plenty to think about and work through.
However, the author is clear that his aim is not to "unravel these issues for the sake of intellectual argument, but to reveal more clearly how God views Israel, Europe and the Middle East in the run up to the return of Jesus" (p247). Furthermore, he discusses what our response should be - namely to turn to God for greater discernment and plead with him in prayer and petition, as Daniel did in his time (see Dan 9).
This fascinating, complex book is concerned with Israel's role in God's end time scenario.
This is the author's first book and the result of thirty years' study in the scriptures on the subjects of Israel and the end times. Clearly this is his speciality and comes across as such. He also emphasises his own personal calling, explaining how several prophetic words and visions from 1977 onwards have spurred him on to be 'a watchman of His word' on these issues.
The book falls into three parts. The first examines Israel's place in history and the future, while the second explains how Israel functions as 'God's clock' to world events. His final section takes up the theme of the Roman Empire as an ancient kingdom and its modern equivalent, the EU.
The author provides lots of scriptures, usually quoted in full and often more than once. He repeats them whenever he feels the need to back up his argument. Clearly he is playing safe here but it can make the book a little tedious, even over-crowded; some sections are nothing more than Biblical quotes with little extra to connect them as though the essence of the book is to keep stringing the scriptures together.
His main objective remains to "calculate the times", with details of how we are to understand the 'years' from the Biblical evidence. Clearly there is something in this, and others have done it before, so perhaps the main value of the book is as a useful comparison. What makes his contribution distinctive, however, is that he comes up with the notion that 2018 will be a significant year; this is where many of the chronological clues in end time prophecies come to a head.
He is keen to stress that this is not a prophetic statement from him, but he believes it is worth considering from the Biblical data whether 2018 will be "marked with a major event" (p133), if not the return of Christ then something else significant. So, for him, it is almost midnight, and for us, we have a couple of years left to investigate and decide for ourselves!
Having published this book in 2008, the author clearly felt another on similar lines was needed a few years later, and so produced The Two Israels of God in the Last Days, (New Wine Press, 175 pages, 2012, £9.99). This may be a useful companion volume but there is a huge overlap and some parts are virtual repeats. Again the main purpose is to examine the prophetic timetable found in Biblical chronology and, as before, a lot of work is required by the reader to follow him through all this.
Thompson continues to show up the error of replacement theology but equally warns that being too pro-Israel can also lead to error. However, his main point is that far from abandoning the nation of Israel, God has a special place for her in fulfilling prophecy at the end of this age. Yes, she is in a time of judgement but this will end. It is all part of the preparation for the coming of her Messiah, at which point there will be restoration and a re-grafting into the cultivated olive tree.
Thompson's main point is that far from abandoning the nation of Israel, God has a special place for her in fulfilling prophecy at the end of this age.
Perhaps this book should be subtitled, Are we nearer midnight? It is left to the reader to decide.
'The Return of Jesus Christ' by Mark Dunman (New Wine Press, 2015, 208 pages, available from the publisher for £10.99, or from the author's site for £10. Save £2 when you buy with 'Has God Really Finished With Israel?')
This is Mark's second book and continues the excellent standard of writing and analysis demonstrated in his first (Has God Really Finished With Israel?).
The author has skilfully navigated his way through the many issues and complexities surrounding the return of Jesus and we can follow him with confidence. He demonstrates a maturity and honesty over his own thinking on these matters, being prepared to say where he has changed his mind or is no longer certain.
Refreshingly he has allowed the study of the Scripture to overrule any emotional responses he may previously have had. He now knows what he believes but he still understands the tensions between various opinions and does not downgrade genuine views that have some Biblical support. He is always fair-minded; persuasive without being argumentative.
In this second book, Mark skilfully navigates many complex issues surrounding the return of Jesus, with refreshing honesty and devotion to Scripture.
Mark is open enough to ask why there is need for another book on this topic - though clearly he believes there is. His main concern is that most Christians avoid this area because there is such a multiplicity of views which can be off-putting. He admits this state of affairs cannot be avoided but offers to help us grasp the principal views and then build on these once a basic understanding becomes established. Here is a real teacher at work.
He does not insist on a single view on everything, but will leave some things open to further insight. He recognises it is unrealistic to always expect a unanimous view but asserts it is possible to narrow down the options, clear away the weaker arguments and to indicate one view to be more likely than another. That, he states, "is what I hope to do" (p15) - and this he certainly does.
His introductory chapter leads us confidently into the analyses that follow. His approach is mainly topical. He tackles the Millennium first, as it is his conviction that what we believe about this will affect other areas, such as the tribulation and rapture. This gives the book a sound structure that is easy to follow.
His second chapter is an excellent exposition on the various views on the Millennium with a very helpful summary chart at the start and other diagrams to guide us as we read on. We then move on to consider the tribulation, Antichrist and the rapture, all handled with expert ease.
Here is a real teacher at work – who admits the complexity of the situation and then helps us build up a basic understanding, without insisting on a single view on everything.
Eventually we work our way into the Gospels and the signs Jesus mentions, and inevitably some attention is given to the various views on the book of Revelation and the conundrums it contains. However, he does not go into these in great detail. His main concern is to show how Revelation ties in with similar Old Testament prophecies. Two other chapters worth a special mention are those on the mystery of Babylon, and the day of the Lord and God's wrath.
As in his first book there are excellent endnotes to each chapter, which helps keep the main text uncluttered. However, unlike before, this time the appendices, glossary and indexes are placed within the book - not on his website; a definite improvement and worth the extra £1 and additional pages! There are also five appendices. Particularly illuminating are those on the Biblical measurement of time, the interpretative rule of double fulfilment and Ezekiel's temple.
There is one slight overlap with his first book - the chapter where he explains his approach to Scripture and how to interpret it. The material here is very similar but it is necessary to repeat within this book. The only question is why it is left until chapter 7 and not placed earlier on.
Recent events and dangers regarding the Middle East provided Mark with the motivation to write another book to ensure that Christians are not overtaken by events and to urge them to pray into these situations. Certainly there is a great need for teaching on the return of Christ, whether imminent or not. Christians have a duty to keep this theme in the forefront of their faith and to pass it on to each generation. This book shows how this can be done. We no longer have any excuse to shirk our responsibility or be scared of it.
Overall, this is a superb piece of work that cannot be recommended highly enough. It has to be one of the best recent books on the return of Christ. Every page is thoughtful and well-written. Read it at whatever pace you wish: quickly to get a clear overview if you are not yet familiar with the ideas, or repeatedly and at leisure to build up more understanding. It will remain fresh and powerful however many times you revisit it.
This is a superb piece of work – it has to be one of the best recent books on the return of Christ.
'Has God Really Finished With Israel?' by Mark Dunman (New Wine Press, 2013, 187 pages, available from the publisher for £9.99, or from the author's website for £9. Save £2 when you buy with 'The Return of Jesus Christ').
Mark Dunman's first book is intended for Christians who want to know more about Israel and what the scriptures have to say on the subject. The spur to write this book was "born of a desire to encourage Christians to recognise God's prophetic return of the Jewish people to the land of Israel and to alert the Church at large to the need to pray for Israel, the Jewish people, the Palestinians and the whole complex situation in the Middle East" (p9).
This call to pray for Israel and the Middle East is the theme of the final chapter and provides a crucial finale to a book packed with information and insight into this vital topic. God is calling us to partner with him in achieving his purposes on earth - something we can do with much more conviction after reading this book. It is no surprise to discover that the author leads such a prayer group.
As a first book it is an exceptional effort based upon industrious research and intelligent reflection. The author has spent many years listening and learning, including time spent in Israel and with Palestinian Christians in the West Bank. He displays a great talent to absorb and then share. Here you will find solid facts, common sense and Spirit-led clarity. His writing is detailed yet not crowded or verbose. As a retired science teacher he is gifted communicator, well used to presenting the evidence for his beliefs, which he does brilliantly.
God is calling us to partner with him in achieving his purposes – something we can do with much more conviction after reading this book.
The author has been willing to examine political perspectives from all sides but ultimately believes that God's word overrides all men's ideas and that God's purpose is paramount. For instance, he sets out to show that "the current return of the Jews to the Holy Land is a fulfilment of Old Testament biblical prophecy and furthermore that in doing this God is honouring his Covenant to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob" (p39).
Two early chapters are devoted to providing some Old Testament background, namely Israel's two exiles - familiar to those who are Biblically literate but a useful summary nevertheless. The next chapter helpfully explains various ways to understand the Bible, in particular how literal and symbolic interpretations differ. The author also analyses the varied opinions and approaches of other well-known Bible teachers (names are given), distinguishing between those who are Christian Zionists and those who are Covenantalists. This is a helpful critique for those wishing to read more widely about Israel in God's purposes.
The author is very clear that Replacement Theology is fundamentally wrong, calling it "an unwarranted interpretation of what the Old Testament actually says about Israel and the Jews" and declaring that "a principal purpose of this book is to demonstrate this" (p10). This he achieves in a chapter which explores its origins and consequences. The next chapter follows this up with a discussion of Palestinian liberation theology, a topic which may be less familiar to many readers. This balance and integrity is typical of the book as a whole.
Here you will find solid facts, common sense and Spirit-led clarity – Dunman is a gifted communicator whose writing is detailed yet not crowded or verbose.
Each chapter has excellent endnotes, indicating the amount of research the author has faithfully undertaken over the years and also providing a useful source for further study by his readers.
As for appendices, bibliography, glossary and indices (both Scripture and general), these do exist but not in the book! Instead they can be found on his website. This is an interesting idea with the intention of keeping the book to a reasonable length and price, but it is inconvenient for the reader - it is noticeable that this experiment was not repeated in the author's second book.
Nevertheless, the website is easy to use and worth looking at to get a feel for the book. As the author explains, the website is intended as a continuation of the book. It also provides a means of buying the book, with a special deal for buying both his books together.
'End-time Survivor', by Neil Turner (Oxford e-books, 2013, 398 pages), available on Amazon for £22.18 (hardback) or £9 (Kindle Edition)
This relatively recent book is an excellent resource for anyone looking to build up their understanding of the complexities of End-Time theology. The subtitle - "A practical handbook for overcomers in the last days" - describes its aim perfectly and it certainly achieves this objective.
The author recognises that as well as being informative there is a need to offer practical advice, especially for younger people who may have to be those end-time overcomers. He is aware that each generation has the responsibility to prepare the next for whatever might happen.
The book took 5 years to write and is the result of 25 years of research into all that Scripture teaches on the last days and the return of Christ. As a handbook it accompanies a course that the author has also put together over this time, called the Omega Programme, but it can equally be used very effectively as a personal study guide. The fact that it is the product of an oft-repeated course prepared over a long period means that it is tried and tested. But one of its most impressive features is that it does not come across merely as a course handbook. It has been well-written and thought through for the general reader. Here is a dedicated and skilful teacher who can present his material in whatever format is required.
This book is accompanies a tried and tested course on the subject – but is more than a mere course handbook.
The style is pleasant, easy-going and immediate. The author does not lecture but presents his ideas with sufficient modesty and humility. He tells you when he is speculating or less sure but we are always confident he has studied it thoroughly himself first. However, he does expect you to do some of the work yourself. You are required to think things through for yourself and only by putting in sufficient time and effort will you get the most out of this book. This is perhaps where the course handbook element comes through most strongly.
His theological approach is a very valid one and offers a clear guide through the whole topic. He sensibly begins with the teachings of Jesus in the gospel, calling it the 'Spine of Biblical Prophecy'. After establishing this "firm foundation for our prophetic panorama" (p85), he sets out to tackle the whole of the book of Revelation. In fact he provides the full text of Revelation, set out in a distinctive and helpful way (pp92-133). Given the length and complexity of Revelation this is a very useful preliminary for the analysis that follows and in itself makes this book a worthwhile addition to other similar study materials.
Clearly there is no single easy way through the maze of texts and topics on the last days but the author has an approach which is as good as any and better than many. All you expect is there; he does not shirk any aspect. If it remains complicated at times (for instance, Revelation) that's because inevitably it is and cannot be over-simplified without losing something important.
Two other chapters are worth a special mention. One is an excellent and thorough analysis of life in the modern world and the trends that seem to be leading to the Tribulation (Ch 6). The other is on Israel, clearly important to God's future plans (Ch 7). There is a lot of Old Testament background on Israel here, perhaps more than necessary for readers who are already Biblically literate, but for anyone approaching end-time theology without this understanding it certainly fills a vital gap.
This book is definitely worth the space on your shelf and the money from your pocket.
Overall this is a well-designed book. The print is large and easy to read, and there are plenty of very useful and colourful charts and pictures (though some pictures seem a little irrelevant and the Word Clouds more gimmicky than informative). The bibliography is rather brief, and there is no index, either topical or Biblical, but there is a helpful key at the front (p17) explaining how to use the book. It comes in hardback form and given its inevitable length this makes it rather heavy and expensive. Nevertheless it is definitely worth the space on your shelf and the money from your pocket.
We submit two historical prophecies to readers for weighing and testing.
This week we are re-publishing two historical prophecies given in Norway – one from 1968, the other from 1937. They concern events in Europe and their relation to the fulfilment of end times prophecy. Of particular interest and encouragement is point four in the 1968 prophecy, which appears to foresee the current refugee crisis.
These prophecies can be found elsewhere on the internet, but their authenticity has been verified to the best of our ability. We submit them to you for your prayerful testing.
An old woman of 90 from Valdres in Norway had a vision from God in 1968. The evangelist Emanuel Minos had meetings (services) where she lived. He had the opportunity to meet her, and she told him what she had seen. He wrote it down, but thought it to be so unintelligible that he put it in a drawer. Now, almost 30 years later, he understands he has to share the vision with others.
The woman from Valdres was a very alert, reliable, awake and credible Christian, with a good reputation among all who knew her. This is what she saw:
"I saw the time just before the coming of Jesus and the outbreak of the Third World War. I saw the events with my natural eyes. I saw the world like a kind of a globe and saw Europe, land by land. I saw Scandinavia. I saw Norway. I saw certain things that would take place just before the return of Jesus, and just before the last calamity happens, a calamity the likes of which we have never before experienced."
She mentioned four waves:
The tears streamed from the old woman's eyes down her cheeks. "I will not see it, but you will. Then suddenly, Jesus will come and the Third World War breaks out. It will be a short war." (She saw it in the vision.)
"All that I have seen of war before is only child's play compared to this one, and it will be ended with a nuclear atom bomb. The air will be so polluted that one cannot draw one's breath. It will cover several continents, America, Japan, Australia and the wealthy nations. The water will be ruined (contaminated?). We can no longer till the soil. The result will be that only a remnant will remain. The remnant in the wealthy countries will try to flee to the poor countries, but they will be as hard on us as we were on them."
"I am so glad that I will not see it, but when the time draws near, you must take courage and tell this. I have received it from God, and nothing of it goes against what the Bible tells."
"The one who has his sin forgiven and has Jesus as Savior and Lord, is safe."
An elder in the Pentecostal Church at Moss, Norway, Martin Andersen, heard the following prophecy in 1937, in Moss:
'When oil comes out of the North Sea and along the Norwegian coast, things will begin to happen, and the return of Jesus is approaching.'
When these words had been proclaimed, people stood up in the congregation and asked the man to sit down and not speak such nonsense. In 1937 it was indeed nonsense to talk about oil being pumped along the Norwegian coast. Today all the world's big oil companies are pumping oil along the coast of Norway. Norway is the world's second greatest exporter of oil - after Saudi Arabia.
The sum of it all is: Jesus is coming soon (suddenly).
Original source editor's note:
The above account was originally transmitted from Israel to friends in the US. It was sent by a Norwegian Christian worker by the name of Ragna Von Porat. Ragna states in a footnote that it was translated from Danish. She further states that Emanuel Minos, the evangelist mentioned in the account, was her friend's closest neighbor in Oslo. She says, "I heard him in my young days. My parents knew him."
Because of my fear of transmitting false prophecy, I have diligently inquired concerning the information in this letter. Publication has been delayed until permission could be secured from Ragna in Israel. In my contact with her, she has assured me that these accounts are true and reliable. In fact, she relates that the first account has already been published in one of Norway's Christian newspapers.
I have found in my own research that the first account was also published by the Christian Information Service in Germany. The website of Dr. Emanuel Minos is active today and can be accessed for verification [NOTE FROM PROPHECY TODAY: Emanuel Minos passed away in 2014 and his website is no longer live]. Although the language on this site is Norwegian, the very similar story of the woman and her vision is posted there in English. The above accounts are transmitted just as they were received.
Ragna took it upon herself to verify as much of the above information as she could. In contacting the Embassy of Norway she learned that Norway has now dropped to the world's third largest oil exporter. Ragna states, "I certainly have no objection to your going ahead [with publishing]. It must be now-if ever."
Last week we re-printed part of an interview with Lance Lambert, in which he gives a Messianic perspective on the future of the Jewish people. Interviewed by Gary Clayton, he concludes by assessing the significance of lsraeI's fortieth anniversary in the light of scripture and world events.
I believe that in many ways the fortieth anniversary of modern IsraeI's history has to be deeply significant. Indeed, there has hardly been a phase in the past forty years that has not been of significance.
It is surely noteworthy that most of the political and military analysts examining the Middle East situation in 1946 and 1947 — before the State of Israel was created — found it hard to believe that Israel would survive. Even after her first year it still seemed incredible that she could have lasted so long. There have been five wars in the forty year period, three of which could easily have seen the liquidation of both state and nation. lt is remarkable that every war has ended not only in Israeli survival, but in triumph — including the first, a war of independence.
People tend to attribute this survival to Jewish intelligence and ingenuity, but as someone who is both a Jew and an Israeli, living in and being part of the nation, I realise what a miracle it is that we have come through. But this is not the only miracle. Anyone examining the economy of Israel can see that it has been disastrously managed. Red tape and bureaucracy have caused enormous problems, which is surprising when we remember that throughout the world Jews are regarded as shrewd and successful businessmen.
Yet forty years on, despite such mismanagement, Israel has a viable economy. This to me is as great a miracle as the one of political stability. It is truly remarkable therefore that Israel has reached her fortieth year.
The question we need to ask is what this new phase actually signifies. Some believe that IsraeI's wars and troubles are over and that she is going to move into a period of peace and establishment, but l cannot subscribe to that view. My intuition and understanding of the prophetic word tell me that Israel faces further war and suffering in the years immediately ahead. I expect that this will herald the beginning of a much greater fulfilment of God's purposes for the nation. The fortieth anniversary is just the start.
My intuition and understanding of the prophetic word tell me that Israel faces further war and suffering in the years immediately ahead. The fortieth anniversary may herald a much greater fulfilment of God's purposes for the nation.
An event took place in Israel last year during the Feast of Tabernacles which went practically unnoticed by the outside world, yet it was one which I feel has great significance. This was the re-enaction of a ceremony which had not been held in Jerusalem for over 2,500 years, not in fact since the time when the last kings of Judah were in the land. It is called the Hakhel, a solemn convocation. This was always summoned in the Sh'mittah, or seventh year, when the land had to lie fallow.
During this ceremony the high priest would gather the people in the Temple and ask the king to read the law from the book of Deuteronomy. For the first time in two and a half millennia, the two chief rabbis gave notice that they were going to hold this ceremony at the western wall, and asked President Chaim Herzog if he would represent the king while they took the place of the high priest. I was present with a group of Messianic believers. It was a most moving and remarkable event with more than thirty-five thousand people present, the largest crowd I ever seen at the western wall.
In 1987 during the Feast of Tabernacles, the Hakhel ceremony was re-enacted in Jerusalem for the first time in over 2,500 years.
It began with a fanfare of military trumpets to announce the arrival of the president, and then a strange, unearthly sound suddenly filled the air. I wondered what it was, but looking up l saw seven men on the western wall dressed in the garb of Levites, blowing seven silver trumpets. From the south-west corner of the temple wall came the sound of a further seven blowing similar instruments, and the two groups echoed one another back and forth. These silver trumpets were being blown for the first time in thousands of years so as to call together the meeting, the solemn convocation.
The law was read and there was much prayer, which I found very moving. There was a strong sense of the Spirit of God and there could hardly have been one Messianic Jew present who was not deeply moved, even to tears. The prayer was for Israel to be given the gift of repentance; for her to return to the Lord and for the Lord to renew her so that she would be able to walk in his ways, forsaking all unrighteousness.
Moving prayers were said for Israel to be given the gift of repentance, for her to return to the Lord and for the Lord to renew her so she would be able to walk in his ways.
We all felt it was a most important event, and coming at the beginning of the new Jewish year of 5748, the fortieth anniversary of Israel, we could not help but wonder what it might herald. It could indicate the beginning of a movement of the Spirit of God to establish the Messianic community and turn the nation towards the Lord.
On the one hand this new phase in Israel's history may see even more war and suffering, on the other it may see the establishment of the nation in new and deeper ways than ever before, particularly on a spiritual level.
Looking at Israel and the global situation, I recollect that it is now 14 or 15 years since I first began warning people that we could be in the run-up to the fulfilment of the prophecy in Ezekiel 38 and 39 concerning war against Israel:
In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety. You and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a storm; you will be like a cloud covering the land (Eze 38:7-9).
Viewing the Middle East through Israeli eyes, it seems clear to me that events are being moved into place in readiness for this prophecy to be fulfilled.
The Ayatollah has received something of a setback in the Gulf as a result of the involvement of Western powers, with lraq's re-arming by the French, the West Germans and the British naturally prolonging the war. The involvement of the United States in bringing its navy into the Gulf with 14 of its warships and the re-flagging of Kuwaiti ships under the Stars and Stripes have likewise prolonged the conflict, as has the Soviet Union's own massive military assistance to Iraq.
It is hard to believe that this war has gone on for more than eight years, resulted in over a million deaths and continues with still no sign of an end in view. Israeli intelligence believes that there will be at least another two years before there is any outcome. Had Iraq and Iran been left to themselves, lraq would probably have collapsed long ago. Her economy is in ruins and her second-largest city practically a ghost town, with no ships able to get in or out of her port. The oil fields in the north have been partially wrecked and Baghdad has been under continuous threat of bombardment by missiles. The Iranians number about 70 million people and are determined to win this war. Morale is quite high and although the economy has suffered it is still functioning.
Iraq, meanwhile, is in colossal debt. She numbers just under 16 million people and suffers from poor morale. I believe Iran will win this war, and so far every month that passes makes it seem even more likely. The other Arab and Islamic leaders are all afraid of Iran. An American intelligence report based on a three and a half month's study stated that it did not matter if there were forty American ships in the Gulf or a hundred, Iran would still win. Not long ago a number of unofficial delegations comprising high-ranking Soviet officials went to Tehran. This may be significant since the American presence in the Gulf is quite likely to trigger a Soviet response.
In the end, Iran may get desperate to conclude the war and so might decide to do some kind of deal with the Soviet Union. I am not predicting that this will necessarily happen, but we should watch out for such developments as they could be significant in the light of Ezekiel's prophecy in chapter 38, concerning the evil scheme of the 'country from the far north' to advance with many nations against Israel.
For many years people have asked what would happen if Iran won the war. The answer is simple, since their oft-stated aim is the 'liberation' of Jerusalem and the liquidation of Israel. I have no doubt that once victory over Iraq is complete they will seek to thrust through Jordan and press on to the mountains of Moab and Gilead.
Iraq is also an enemy of Israel, and this is why the latter has been only too happy for Iran and Iraq to have been at each other's throats for so long. I believe that, once the war is over, the victors' attention will shift to Israel.
I believe that once the Gulf War is over, the victors' attentions will shift to Israel.
Syria, meanwhile, is in a quandary. Her economy is in ruins and she is dependent on Saudi Arabia to bail her out. The Kuwaitis, Saudis and other sheikhs have been pouring large sums of money into Iraq to keep her afloat and Saudi Arabia recently questioned whether she would continue to support Syria in view of the latter's antagonistic attitude towards Iraq. Not so long ago at the Islamic Conference at Amman Jordan's King Hussein tried to bring about a reconciliation between Syria and Iraq. The one thing Syria and Iraq have in common is that both are violently opposed to Israel.
In Mikhail Gorbachev the Soviet Union has the youngest and most popular leader for decades. As a result of his glasnost ('openess') policy he has an excellent public image. He appears a much more open, contemporary and compassionate leader, yet it is hard to believe that a man who was for many years a leader in the KGB could ever really be as good as he sounds. I do not know of a single Jew released from Soviet Union who does not regard glasnost as little more than an exercise in window-dressing. Many of them are concerned that the West is being taken in by this new approach.
I believe that the Soviet Union's real plan is to let out some ten thousand or so Jewish activists who are considered to be trouble-makers but keep the remaining three million Jews where they are. There is no doubt, however, that this community will come home to Israel in the end, and that it will be by divine dictate. I am certain of this because of the prophetic words of Isaiah 43:3-6:
For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour...do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you up from the west. I will say to the north, "Give them up!" and to the south, "Do not hold them back". Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth.
Some good things are happening in Israel and we have to be thankful for them. We live in a country battling for its life, one in which most young people have been involved in at least one war before reaching their twenties, and which has problems no other nation has. If we have special problems, however, we have special promises as well; promises made by God through the prophets. They are promises no other nation has.
If Israel has special problems with conflict and survival, it also has special promises made by God that no other nation has.
Clifford Hill connects the migration crisis to Bible prophecies about the end of days, and suggests that God may have a special purpose for Britain at this time.
As of today, Friday 18 September, in this fast moving crisis, Croatia has become the latest European country to close its borders as the great migrant invasion of Europe intensifies, and Hungary has begun extending its fence along the borders with Croatia. Even Germany has introduced border controls to stop the unmanageable flow of migrants from Austria.
So what is the significance of all this as Europe is thrown into turmoil by what appears to be an unending flow of migrants? Clearly these are not just refugees fleeing war-torn Syria and Iraq, but something is stirring in nations right across the world where there is dissatisfaction with current life chances. Already hundreds of thousands are on the move and potentially this could be millions who want to jump on the bandwagon and reach Europe.
It is significant that the most popular destination is Germany – not because the migrants speak German but because it's the richest country in Europe. Angela Merkel has lit the touch paper of a migrant tsunami that is already causing major confusion, social chaos and political disunity throughout Europe. It has the potential of creating a catastrophic social, economic and political disaster.
It is significant that the majority of the migrants attempting to enter Europe are Muslims. Some 25 years ago I published an article in the print magazine Prophecy Today saying that the greatest threat to peace in Europe was not from the Soviet Union but from militant Islam. The USSR was at the height of its power and the Cold War between East and West occupied the attention of newspapers and politicians alike. Islam was hardly given a thought except to note the brutal war between Iran and Iraq that lasted for most of the 1980s and resulted in more than 1 million deaths. But for those who were studying the signs of the times with an open Bible and an ear tuned to God, there were unmistakable warnings that Islam would soon be a major threat to world peace.
For those studying the signs of the times with an open Bible and an ear tuned to God, there have long been warnings that Islam would soon threaten world peace.
I'm not implying that I was the only one sounding a warning note about Islam. In Prophecy Today we published a number of articles in the 1980s by writers such as Clifford Denton, Lance Lambert, Ray Register, John Lafin, John Ray and Patrick Sookhdeo, who all perceived danger lying ahead. This danger is now being intensified by news of ISIS' plans to infiltrate Europe with half a million jihadists and that an unknown number have already mixed with the flow of migrants into Europe. This danger was highlighted yesterday by the head of MI5 warning that they had intercepted and prevented five attempts by jihadists already this year.
It is notable that Saudi Arabia, which has so far taken no refugees from Syria, has offered to build 200 mosques in Germany! No doubt this is their contribution to the Islamisation of Europe! Saudi Arabia has also just announced that it intends to crucify an 18-year-old boy for taking part in a protest against government policy. This is in accord with sharia law that they want to impose upon Europe!
So what's going on? Is there any word from the Lord? What does the Bible have to say about the times in which we are living?
Lance Lambert, who died recently, was one of the greatest of modern prophets, a Jew who accepted Jesus as Messiah. He gave us two interviews for Prophecy Today some three months before the 40th anniversary of the State of Israel. We published these in March and May 1988 and are re-publishing them today and next week because we believe they are relevant to the situation that is now developing across the Middle East and Europe (see the first article here). Lance said that he did not think that anything remarkable was going to happen to Israel on the 40th anniversary. He said,
I do feel that we have nevertheless passed irreversibly into the last phase of world history. We know this from Luke 21:24, where Jesus prophesies that the Jewish people will fall by the sword, be taken as captives into all the nations, and Jerusalem trampled on by foreigners 'until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled'.
Are the 'times of the Gentiles' now fulfilled? This is the big question that biblical scholars have been debating since 1967, when Israel re-gained hold of Jerusalem. There is no definitive answer to this but the 'great shaking of the nations' prophesied by the biblical prophets (Isaiah 2, Haggai 2 and Hebrews 12) appears to be happening in our lifetime.
Back in 1988, Lance Lambert stated a belief that we have passed into the last phase of world history, when the 'times of the Gentiles' will be fulfilled.
Add to these prophecies the words of Jesus' warning that "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places" (Matt 24:7). Jesus also warns that those who believe in him will be persecuted and at the same time there will be a great increase in wickedness, but the gospel will be preached in the whole world (Matt 24:9-14).
There is plenty of evidence in the daily news that all these things are happening today, including the Church worldwide growing at the fastest rate in history, despite the great falling away in Europe. So how does the migration crisis in Europe fit into this picture?
The prophet Isaiah actually refers to the British Isles a number of times. He links "the islands" with "the ends of the earth". In those days the islands off the coast of Europe were at the end of the known world, so it is a reasonable assumption that he is referring to the British Isles. There are some significant references in what biblical scholars know as 'The Servant Songs' (all Messianic statements that link Israel as a nation with the person of Messiah). The Songs show God working out his ultimate purposes for the salvation of the nations through Israel and the Messiah.
The first of the four 'Servant Songs' is Isaiah 42:1-4 which begins "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations." God has undoubtedly used and mightily blessed Britain in the past, but in today's highly secularised environment, has the faithful remnant of believers sufficient spiritual strength to stand against the tide of unbelief and godless moral anarchy? Is there sufficient spiritual strength to serve the purposes of God at such a time as this?
Isaiah actually refers to the British Isles a number of times, perhaps indicating that they have a special place in the purposes of God.
This prophetic statement indicates that the British Isles have a special place in the purposes of God. God does not change his mind so this is still true today! The second Servant Song (Isa 49:1-6) begins with a call to the islands – "Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations..." It concludes with the promise to Israel, "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."
Historically, Britain has indeed enjoyed a special place in God's purposes, being used powerfully in the worldwide spread of the Gospel. But does that purpose still exist for modern, 'post-Christian' Britain?
The final reference to 'the islands' in Isaiah is found in the last chapter, which is all in the context of the final conflict before the advent of the new heavens and the new earth, establishing the reign of God upon earth. It speaks of a sign being sent to "the distant islands...They will proclaim my glory among the nations" (Isa 66:19).
If we put this in the context of Jesus' words in the days leading up to his second coming, "There will be great distress, unequalled from the beginning of the world until now – and never to be equalled again" (Matt 24:21), we may expect a time of unparalleled upheaval and conflict among the nations.
My own interpretation is that we are moving towards a time of great conflict that will engulf Europe and the Middle East. The 'Arab Spring' that began on 18 December 2010 in Tunisia lit the fuse for this period, which has spread across North Africa and the Gulf States to link with the intense conflict within Islam that began with the Iran/Iraq conflict between Sunni and Shia Muslims and is now devastating Syria.
An irreversible process has begun that will lead to open conflict unless there is divine intervention. If it is a right interpretation of Isaiah's vision, Britain has a special part to play within the purposes of God. The question is whether there is sufficient strength in the Judeo/Christian biblical heritage of the nation to enable Britain to carry out its role of bringing the word of the Lord into this situation.
In order to do this it may be that Britain will need to separate from the rest of Europe and be prepared to stand alone under God (alongside an increasingly secularised Europe but not under its godless direction). I believe the word of the Lord to Britain today is, "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty" (Zech 4:6). To this we must add the words of Jesus to his disciples that we should, "watch and pray" (Matt 26:41).
I believe that we are moving towards a time of great conflict in Europe and the Middle East, unless there is divine intervention. Britain may well have a special part to play, but will she be prepared to stand for God?
Dr Hill will elaborate on this theme in another feature article, to be published on Friday 25 September. In the meantime any comments from readers posted below would be greatly appreciated.
ln this, the first of two articles, we re-print an interview with Lance Lambert from 1988, in which he gives a Messianic perspective on the fortieth anniversary of the State of Israel. Interviewed by Gary Clayton, Lance responds to the question: what does the future hold for the Jews, God's chosen people?
I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons, theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the laws, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all (Rom 9:3-5).
In Paul's letter to the Romans, the apostle refers to the Jews as being the natural branches of the olive tree that is Christ. At present some of these branches have been broken off so that, like wild olive shoots, the Gentiles can be grafted in, but when the full number of the Gentiles comes in, we will see many of the natural branches restored.
I do not think it will necessarily happen this year, the fortieth anniversary of the State of Israel, that the natural branches will be restored to the olive tree, but l do feel that we have nevertheless passed irreversibly into the last phase of world history. We know this from Luke 21:24, where Jesus prophesies that the Jewish people will fall by the sword, be taken as captives into all the nations, and Jerusalem trampled on by foreigners "until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled".
When the full number of Gentiles has come in, in the last phase of world history, we will see many of the natural branches of Christ's olive tree (i.e. Jews) restored.
The phrase "times of the Gentiles" signifies every time in history in which the Jews are subjugated by Gentile or non-Jewish ideologies, nations or forces. What Jesus was saying, therefore, is that these times would last until a change took place in the status of Jerusalem. Such a change did take place on the 6th and 7th of June, 1967.
In the last nineteen hundred years, ever since Jerusalem came under non-Jewish domination (barring 135/136 AD in the time of Hadrian, when Bar Kochba led a rebellion against the Romans and for a time liberated Jerusalem) it has never been under Jewish sovereignty or government. However, in 1967 the status of Jerusalem changed when it was placed under Jewish sovereignty and government, becoming the capital of the independent Jewish state.
Along with the appearance of this sign we also note the presence of wars, rumours of wars, earthquakes, famines, pestilences and persecution, all of which are a prelude to the Second Coming of Christ. lt would therefore seem that something is going to happen to the Jewish people, and perhaps the 1988 anniversary holds real significance as a result.
In Romans 12:25-26 Paul says to Christians of Gentile extraction, "I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited. Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved." Unfortunately however, there does exist a conceit in the Christian world, especially in the West. At its worst this conceit has resulted in an anti-Jewish attitude, or at least a feeling that the Church can have nothing to do with the Jews.
There is a lack of recognition of the fact that the root of the olive tree is Jewish, as is the tree itself, and in the end will regain its natural branches. I do not believe that every Jew will automatically be saved simply because he is a Jew, any more than every Gentile could be automatically saved. It is only God's elect people who will receive salvation.
The conceit is not malicious, however, but comes from the fact that the Christian church is largely Hellenised in culture, having adopted an almost totally Gentile outlook despite its Jewish roots and background. Such an attitude is understandable since the vast majority of Christians over the centuries have been Gentile. However, this does not in any way detract from the fact, stated by Jesus himself (in John 4:22), that salvation is from the Jews.
There is a lack of recognition in the Christian world, especially in the West, that the olive tree of Christ is Jewish, and in the end will regain its natural branches.
When Paul uses the term 'mystery' to describe what will happen to Israel he does not refer to something so academically complex as to be incomprehensible, but instead uses the term to denote a secret revealed to the initiated - to those born of God. Unfortunately most Christians are ignorant of this mystery. After all, the gospel can be preached until the speaker is blue in the face but unless the Spirit of God opens the eyes of the listeners they cannot be saved. It is precisely the same with Israel, for the Spirit of God has to touch the Christian heart before it can understand God's purposes regarding the Jewish people.
I believe that there are only two peoples in the world with whom God has made an everlasting covenant- the Jews through Abraham (Gen 17:7), and the true Church of God with whom he made a new and eternal covenant.
These are the only two peoples throughout history to have suffered horrifically and continuously. They have been hounded from pillar to post, persecuted, denigrated, devalued, drowned, burnt, buried alive and beheaded. I cannot understand it when people try to explain that the true church has suffered because it is the apple of God's eye and that the Jewish people suffer because they have been rejected by God. This simply does not make sense. Instead, I believe that the reason for this suffering has to do with both peoples being bound up with a divine destiny.
Throughout history, the Jews and the Christians have both suffered horrifically and continuously. I believe that the reason for this suffering has to do with both being bound up with a divine destiny.
Both peoples share the same origin, the same revelation of God, the same prophets, the same scriptures, the same Messiah. Indeed, both believe in the future coming of the Messiah: the Christian that he will return, the Jew that he will come for the first time. They both believe that the Messiah will bring in the kingdom of God and establish it on earth, resulting in the knowledge of the glory of God covering the earth as the waters cover the sea.
Sadly, over the centuries Jews and Gentiles have tended to part company over the character of the Lord Jesus. Walls of suspicion and distrust have grown up to the extent that they would appear to be almost entirely alienated from one another. Somehow these two peoples will come together and be forged into one in the person, and through the work, of Jesus Christ the Messiah.
As we enter into this new period in the history of the State of Israel we must be nearer than ever to this great event, the fulfilment of PauI's inspired statements concerning the grafting in of the natural branches. When this occurs it will result in resurrection life and power for the whole redeemed community.

Recent discussions about the so-called 'blood moons' phenomenon deserve to be weighed carefully. We are publishing two articles for your prayerful consideration and feedback.
There has been much said recently about the prophetic significance of a series of blood red moons and whether this is a fulfilment of biblical prophecy or early signs that will eventually culminate in greater and more pronounced fulfilment. At Prophecy Today, we are cautious about predicting dates but certainly alert to the signs of the times. Our 'Comment' articles are designed to provide help in interpreting these signs and our 'Study' section is an aid for our readers to grow in biblical knowledge and discernment.
Our Board has noted the widespread interest in the so-called 'blood moons' and has traced it back to publications in the USA from Mark Biltz and John Hagee. There have been some responses from the scientific community to these, which indicate that we must be cautious about overstating the case. We are, therefore, still assessing our position.
In the light of this, we are publishing two articles: the first written by one of our Board members and the second by a regular contributor to the ministry of Prophecy Today UK. Our purpose is to offer these as discussion papers for you to consider. Any feedback you are prompted to send us will be welcome.

Like any city in the hours before dawn, this city was outwardly quiet and asleep. But some families couldn't sleep because their normally quiet dogs continually barked, asking to be let out and then in again. In the countryside, a farmer bringing his herd in for milking stared in disbelief when all 500 cows suddenly sat down. Another farmer went to let his agitated dog out at about 4am and suddenly birds began to chirp, the neighbour's pigs started to squeal and his own cows began to bellow. Then, just as suddenly, all went quiet. Something odd was happening. At 4:35am a terrifying 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck, about 40km west of Christchurch. 4 September 2010 will be remembered.
No-one knows exactly what animals sense at such times, but the Creator has placed in them an awareness of his mighty power of which we know nothing. Migratory birds obey their God-given instincts but man refuses to obey God's laws (Jer 8:7). He has warned us clearly in his word of the consequences of such actions. Indeed, judgment is coming upon this sinful world, for Paul reminds us that God has appointed a day when he will judge the world in righteousness (Acts 17:31).
God speaks to us in many ways – through his word, through his creation, through dreams or visions, through some traumatic event, or directly by his Spirit. He also calls out to us through the warning system he has given us - our conscience (personal or national), so we know when we should turn back to him.
But to societies and nations that rebel against him, he warns them with judgment, and we can see clear examples of this in the world today. In his patience to bring man to repentance, one way he speaks is through repetitive patterns that help us to recognise his voice. A series of warnings include his use of cycles of 7, notably Shabbat, the 7th day, Sh'mittah, the 7th year, and Jubilee, the 50th year (the year after 7x7 years). Seven is the number of completion, perfection, or fullness, and God's prophetic calendar is based on this number. Seven is found in so much of his creation - one might say it is God's own number.
Every 7th day is called Shabbat. The word simply means rest; it's a time of rest for all mankind. But Exodus 16:23 also tells us it is "a holy Sabbath to the Lord". It is a God-ordained day for man to follow to reflect his Maker's pattern, a day to make a dwelling-place for God each week, a place he so desires.
Likewise, every 7th year was to be a year of rest, a Sh'mittah year. This word means to release, from the Hebrew root shamat, meaning to let fall, or fling down. Every 7th year the land was to be released from the work of producing food, and lie fallow for a whole year. It is called "the Lord's release" (Ex 23:11, Lev 25:2-7, Deut 15:1-7).
The Sh'mittah year had two principal functions:
Failure to keep the Sh'mittah year had serious consequences (Lev 36:33-35; 2 Chron. 36:21; Jer 25:11-2, 29:10; Dan 9:2): exile in Babylon for 70 years, to cover the 70 Sh'mittah years that had not been kept (490 years) between 1006-516 BC.
After 7 Sh'mittah years the shofar is sounded and a Jubilee is proclaimed, on Yom Kippur in the 50th year, when every man returned to his possessions and to his family. We can see here God's choice of cycles of seven.
Here are 7 possible reasons:
Only Israel was commanded to observe the Sh'mittah year, but as they moved away from God, he used this year as a sign of warning and as judgment, in both the North and the South Kingdoms, to turn them back to him. This applies to Israel as his covenant people. But as a prophetic sign it may clearly apply to any nation, especially those he has historically blessed and equipped for spreading the gospel. God speaks clearly through Jeremiah (18:7-8):
If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned.
The Sh'mittah year may become an instrument of judgment upon nations that do not respond to the warnings God gives them. The sins of ancient Israel have been repeated by modern nations, so we should not be surprised to find God expressing correction in a similar way today to turn nations back to him. Yet this can also bring blessing, if people heed the warnings and turn back to God, as Israel did through their exile in Babylon. By following God's word through Ezekiel, they increased in number and wealth, and idolatry was no more found among them after their return to the Promised Land.
America was founded on biblical principles, based upon Israel, and consecrated to God on 30 April 1789 by its first President, George Washington. In his inaugural address, he gave a prophetic message: "The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself hath ordained".
However, from early times leaders in America have set themselves against the Lord and against his Anointed, breaking the restraining bands of God's laws and casting off the cords of his love. Over the past 50 years, there have been major economic and financial catastrophes following a 7-year cycle, with each fall occurring at the end of the Sh'mittah years (see Table 1). These have become more severe as God has increased the shaking world-wide since 1986. Warnings and opportunities to turn back to God have been largely missed, or responses have been short-lived.
Psalm 2 tells us that if nations rebel against the Lord, with no response to his warnings, he will judge them (Heb. bahal, terrify, cause to tremble). Even after the climatic storms that the Lord has brought upon America since 1965, and increasingly now upon the UK as well, neither nation has learned this lesson. Both have forgotten God's hand of blessing of power and wealth, as both nations took his message of salvation to the world. It is good to remember God's caution at times like this: "You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth..." (Deut 8:17-18).
Like the people of Ephraim and Samaria in ancient Israel, after 9/11 America, instead of seeking God in humility asking why such a terrible disaster had occurred, defiantly declared: "the bricks have fallen down but we will build with dressed stone; the fig trees have been felled but we will replace them with cedars." Sadly, this verse was originally a statement of Israel's rebellion against God which America's political leaders misunderstood. This was the Lord's response: "But the people have not returned to him who struck them...Those who guide this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray." (Isa 9:9-16).
This year there have been two tectonic events in which the UK and the USA have crossed a line.
These culture-changing events will affect not just marriage, but the nations and, not least, the church. The church's response in both nations has been largely silent, or accepting, but recall Philip Wren's prophetic voice that if legalised in the UK, gay marriage will be a rod of correction on a disobedient church.
Sh'mittah years end on the 29th of the last month Elul, the day before Rosh Hashanah (1st Tishrei, or Jewish New Year). This year, the 29 Elul falls on 13 September and is marked by a solar eclipse, the fifth of six signs in the heavens in the past two years, which God has given to get our attention.
If God continues the pattern he has used to turn nations back to him, we may see a major judgment in the months after 29 Elul/13 September 2015 in both the USA and the UK. Many media comments this year have anticipated a stock market crash in late 2015, and world markets are increasingly fragile. When the Chinese yuan was devalued (>3%) last month, there were widespread losses on stock exchanges throughout Asia and Europe.
We remember the so-called 'Flash Crash' in 2010 when Wall Street fell 600 points in just 5 minutes, losing $1Tn. This year, the UK FTSE 100 share index has hit a record high, a feature also seen prior to crashes in 1987 and 2007-8 (note also that the last trading day to remit debts will be Friday 11 September 2015, before Shabbat begins at sunset. This is also the day of the debate in the House of Commons on the evil Assisted Dying Bill).
However, the dates of this shaking are less important than the purpose. The tetrad of total lunar eclipses at Pesach and Sukkot, in 2014/2015 and ending in this Sh'mittah season, is one sign that God is using to call out to the nations (and to Israel) to turn and repent, to restore a right relationship with the Lord, and with families, neighbours, friends and enemies. Beloved, the time is short. Now is the day of salvation. The Lord says to us, as he said to Isaiah, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?"
In Luke 12:56, Yeshua expressed amazement at the people's hypocrisy: "You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?" And in response to questions about those who had been killed in accidents (v4), or by evil men (v1), Jesus said, "Unless you repent, you too will all perish." Do you think he might be saying this to us today also? Do we discern the time rightly? This should be a major focus for small house groups and for larger churches in the coming weeks. Many churches offer little or no biblical teaching on understanding the times in which we are living.
We need to know and proclaim the place of safety for these days. The Hebrew word for safety is Yeshua. In his talk with Nicodemus on the need to be born again of the Holy Spirit, Jesus said "Truly, truly, except a man is born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God" (John 3:3). When Jesus says "Truly, truly", he means it - for he is The Truth (John 14:6). No discussion, no argument, no relative excuses. By contrast, after the Supreme Court decision in June, Obama declared: "This ruling is a victory for America. When all Americans are treated equal we are all more free" (Washington Post, 26 June 2015). However, it is not equality that sets us free, but The Truth (John 8:32).
These days are the days of Elijah, to be the voice that declares God's word. These are the days of Ezekiel, to be labourers in his harvest. These are the days that Isaiah saw, when he said, "See, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness is over the peoples." See – it is a call to watch, to take heed, to be aware of what God is doing in the world; how he is intervening in the earth, and to be watchmen for our nation. There are very dark clouds gathering over the nations, which are in distress and perplexed (Luke 21:25).
"And this gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come" (Matt 24:14).
God is calling us to take note of his warnings, to be lights in dark places, boldly to share our testimonies of his goodness and to be sons of Issachar, who know the signs of the times and how they apply to both Israel and the nations.
We need to understand what the Lord is saying, and pray that the great shaking of the nations that is happening in our lifetime will produce the fullness of God's purpose. We must also pray for the true church, Jew and Gentile, to rise up and fulfil its calling. We must be careful not to pray for God to stop the shaking (Hag 2, Heb 12), or to stop bringing evil into the light, in case we put ourselves against God. It is God who forms the light and creates darkness.
We should have Israel, and America and Britain, in our prayers: praying for greater trust and faith in God who is the only one who can give peace and security to the nations through Jesus our Messiah, the One who died that we might live, and who rose again to give us life.
Kumi ori ki va orech, u'khvod Adonai alaich zarach.
Arise shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
(Isa 60:1)
This is for Israel, of course, but also for believers in the Gentile nations who are grafted in among them.
This table relates major events in the USA and Israel to the end of Sh'mittah years, especially the 29 Elul. It also shows the 7- and 28-year cycles.

By Charles Gardner
There is a season for everything under heaven, according to the wisdom of Solomon. And I'm specifically thinking of his dictum that there's "a time to mourn and a time to dance" (Ecc 3:4).
Black clouds of impending doom are swooping down upon us all, and especially on God's ancient people, but the rainbow of ultimate peace also lies ahead, and we should not be too down-hearted.
On September 14 there will be much rejoicing as Jews everywhere celebrate their New Year in a month set to witness some quite extraordinary, even alarming, events connected with the future of Israel. I will look at these in a moment.
We have just marked a time of mourning for Israel – a date known as the 9th of Av in the Jewish calendar (25 July this year) which brings back bad memories of a past which has seen so many attempts to annihilate the Jewish nation.
It was on this date that the First Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC. And it was on the very same day 656 years later – in 70 AD – that the Romans destroyed the Second Temple. The Jews subsequently rebelled against their occupiers, but were brutally butchered in 133 AD – again on the 9th of Av – after which they were dispersed to all four corners of the earth.
This included England, from which they were expelled in 1290 AD – on the 9th of Av. Then in 1492 they were expelled from Spain and given four months to put their affairs in order and leave the country, the deadline for which was the 9th of Av.
Then came World War II and the Holocaust, said by historians to have been the long drawn-out conclusion of World War I, which broke out on the 9th of Av. And, it is said, the first gas chambers were put into use on the very same day of the year!
Understandably, the Jewish people have much to mourn. And our duty as Christians, grafted into the olive tree of God's chosen people (Rom 11:11-24), is to love them, stand with them and pray for them.
A series of significant events are scheduled for September, starting perhaps with the New Year celebrations. The Pope will be visiting the White House to meet with the President on the holiest day of the Jewish Year (Yom Kippur, 23 September 23). And a super-sized blood-red moon will shine over Jerusalem on 28 September during the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot). This will be the last of four successive 'blood moons' (known as a 'tetrad') to coincide with the main Jewish feasts of Passover and Sukkot in 2014 and 2015, a rare occurrence last witnessed in 1967 when, as a result of the Six-Day War, the Old City of Jerusalem came under Israeli control for the first time in 2,000 years.
In addition, the United Nations are said to be planning to declare a Palestinian state without Israel's consent or input and there is also, of course, the ongoing threat of Hamas and Hezbollah along with that of a potentially nuclear-armed Iran whose leaders have made no bones about their intention to "wipe Israel off the map". The recent deal negotiated with the big powers is, at best, only putting off the evil day rather than neutralising a dangerous rogue state.
In the light of this, an 800-year-old rabbinic commentary is most revealing. Known to the Jewish world as the Yalkut Shimoni, its translation by Rabbi Nachman Kahana includes this specific portion:
Paras (Persia-Iran) will be the dread of humanity. The world's leaders will be frustrated in their futile efforts to save what they can, but to no avail. The people of Yisrael will also be petrified by the impending danger. And HaShem (the Lord) will say to us, 'Why are you afraid? All of this I have done in order to bring you the awaited redemption. And this redemption will not be like the redemption from Egypt, which was followed by suffering. This redemption will be absolute, followed by peace.
Various Jewish rabbis are now sensing that their Messiah is soon to come. The day is surely not far off when beleaguered Israel will recognize the One who has loved them with an everlasting love (Jer 31:3) and who is destined to reign from Jerusalem for a thousand years of perfect peace (Rev 20:4).
Jesus told his disciples that his coming would follow an unprecedented period of distress after which "the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light" (Matt 24:29. Interestingly, a total solar eclipse occurred in the midst of the current tetrad of blood moons).
"At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory," he said. (Mark 13:24-26)
Come, Lord Jesus!
