Society & Politics

  • Covid-19 and the shutdown of liberty: Civil society groups worldwide are pleading with governments to not allow the pandemic to be used as a pretext for rolling out unprecedented – and permanent – levels of surveillance. Read more here and here. The Covid-19 bill that passed through the UK Parliament at the end of last month also prompted expressions of concern from rights groups.
  • Jewish Chronicle going into liquidation: The newspaper, which is the longest continually running Jewish paper in the world, is set to close in coming weeks due to the impacts of the pandemic. Read more here. Jewish News, which was previously set to merge with the Chronicle, is also unable to survive.
  • Keir Starmer pledges to eradicate Labour anti-Semitism: The new Party leader, whose wife’s family is Jewish, does not describe himself as a Zionist but has pledged support for Zionists as well as for the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of anti-Semitism. Read more here.
  • Passion Plays postponed or cancelled, but…: Though plays around the world are being put on hold or cancelled completely due to coronavirus, there are historic recordings on Youtube that can be watched instead, such as this one from St Neots in Cambridgeshire. The original and most famous passion play is performed in Oberammergau, Germany.

  • Coalition for Marriage Director Norman Wells dies: The passionate advocate for biblical marriage and family has died from Covid-19, aged 56. He is survived by his wife Nicola and their nine children. Read tributes here and here.

World Scene

  • Fears of economic collapse grow: Fears are growing for the future of the Euro as the EU not only faces continent-wide recession but pleas for financial assistance from its third and fourth largest economies, Spain and Italy. Read more here. African leaders are warning that their economies are at risk as over half of the continent’s countries have gone into lockdown. Read more here. Any worldwide recession that might be caused by the pandemic will begin with a backdrop of a global debt of 322% of GDP - 40 percentage points higher than the level which preceded the 2008 financial crisis.
  • 60 Christians murdered in five weeks: The genocide being carried out against believers by Muslim Fulani herdsmen saw dozens of lives claimed last month and several villages razed to the ground. Read more here.
  • Locust plague worsened by coronavirus: The pandemic is making the locust swarms in East Africa worse, the UN has said, by delaying deliveries of pesticides. Read more here. The present locust invasion is of unprecedented proportions and is threatening the food supplies of millions.
  • Partial ceasefire agreed for Yemen war: The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Iran-backed Houthis has agreed to cease military operations for a fortnight, in the hope that a permanent ceasefire can be agreed to end the five-year war. It is unclear whether the Houthis will follow suit. Read more here.
  • Sri Lankan PM calls for ‘anti-conversion law’: The law would be intended to prevent people from converting out of Buddhism to other religions. There are fears that it could easily become a pretext for the persecution of Christians. Read more here.
  • Bernie Sanders pulls out of Democratic race: The 78-year-old socialist has ended his bid for the Democratic nomination for the 2020 Presidential election, leaving Joe Biden as the presumptive nominee. Read more here.

Israel & Middle East

  • Israeli unity govt talks stall: Relations between Netanyahu’s Likud Party and Gantz’s Blue and White Party have reportedly deteriorated, with both sides blaming each other for the lack of agreement. Read more here.
