Society & Politics

  • Hezbollah flags fly on streets of London: The controversial Al Quds march went ahead last Sunday. However, unconfirmed reports suggest that calls for Hezbollah to be proscribed fully as a terrorist organisation may finally be being heeded by Government ministers.   • Corbyn celebrates end of Ramadan with…: The Opposition Leader chose to break the Ramadan fast with a Muslim leader who has previously compared Israel to the Nazis. Read more here.
  • Abortions in Scotland hit five-year high: Statistics suggest that much more work needs to be done to support women through pregnancy in Scotland. Read more here. This is despite new polls suggesting that the majority of Scots favour either no change to the abortion law or a reduction in its maximum term of 24 weeks.
  • Jewish cemetery vandalised in Manchester: The incident, in which over 30 headstones were toppled and smashed to pieces, follows similar vandalism at the same cemetery last month. Police are investigating them as hate crimes. Read more here.

  • Overhaul of CofE law to allow preachers from other denominations: A shake-up of current Church structures will allow ministers from other denominations – including Pentecostal and charismatic streams – to be invited to preach and lead services. Read more here.
  • North Korean defector speaks of persecuted Christians: The testimony, shared by Open Doors, speaks of public executions of believers. Read more here.

Israel & Middle East

  • UN condemns Israel on Gaza: On Wednesday the General Assembly passed a resolution chastising Israel for ‘excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate force’, 120-8 with 45 abstentions. An amendment condemning Hamas, proposed by the US, was rejected on procedural grounds, despite it garnering some support. Read more here.
  • Tens of thousands of Iranians stand with Israel: Iranian civilians have been taking to Twitter to declare their support for Israel, turning Al Quds day into a show of support for the Jewish state. Read more here. It follows Israeli PM Netanyahu’s social media video promising free help with water-saving techniques to the Iranian people, who are suffering from severe drought.
  • Sculpted head of biblical king unearthed in Israel: The small ceramic figure’s head, which dates back to the 9th Century BC, turned up at a dig at Abel Beth Maacah, north of the Sea of Galilee. It is thought to depict a king – perhaps Ahab. Read more here.
