  • New bill seeks to ban minor disability abortion: A cross-party group of MPs led by Fiona Bruce MP will present a bill to Parliament next week seeking to prevent abortion on the basis of a minor disability diagnosis (e.g. club foot, cleft palate). Read more here. Also this week, Down’s Syndrome campaigners are taking legal action to challenge the Government over its permission of abortion up to birth of Down’s babies. Read more here.
  • Police investigate ‘DIY’ abortion of 28-week-old baby: A mother who ended the life of her 28-week-old unborn child by taking abortion pills she received legally by post is now facing police investigation. Read more here.
  • Trocadero mosque proposal sparks controversy: The derelict West End landmark may soon be transformed into an Islamic community centre and place of worship, though the proposal is stirring significant opposition. Read more here. Also this week, a request from Harrow Central Mosque to broadcast the adhan over loudspeaker every Friday is triggering complaints from local residents. Read more here.
  • Britain the ‘cocaine capital’ of Europe: Usage of the Class A drug in Britain has quadrupled in less than a decade. Read more here.

  • Queen’s faith sustaining her: According to PEOPLE magazine, the Queen is drawing heavily on her faith during this time of pandemic, even though she is not able to worship as she would normally. Read more here.

  • Trump signs executive order on social media giants: After criticising the anti-conservative bias of Twitter, Trump has ordered a review into the power of social media giants, seeking to remove their legal immunity. Read more here.
  • Apple and Google tracking software marks ‘watershed’: Despite concerns about privacy, the two tech giants have unveiled a software tool, which will become part of the operating system of all ioS and Android phones, upon which contact-tracing apps can be built. Read more here and here.
  • China cements grip on Hong Kong: Security legislation passed this week will increase China’s power over the city, prompting many residents to consider emigrating as they fear a loss of their freedoms. Read more here. The US has acknowledged that, to all intents and purposes, Hong Kong is no longer autonomous.

Israel & Middle East

  • PLO re-iterates promise to end agreements with Israel: Despite repeated similar threats not being carried through in the past, Palestinian President Abbas has doubled down on his apparent commitment to sever all connections with Israel in protest of the impending annexation of parts of Judea and Samaria.   • US ends final sanctions waivers on Iran: The last vestiges of sanctions relief under the 2015 nuclear deal have now been removed, as the US continues its maximum pressure campaign on Iran. Read more here. Also this week, Iran’s Ayatollah Khameini has come under fire for referring to ‘the final solution’ in a tweet about destroying Israel. Read more here.
