Society & Politics

  • Faith in evolution hits new low: A new poll shows that only half of British people believe evolution is true, whilst a third are sure that it is not (up from a quarter a decade ago). One in 10 believe in creationism, with that figure rising to nearly 1 in 5 (17%) for under 29s. Read more here.
  • Scottish MPs reject non-binary census option: The next Scottish census will retain the traditional male/female options, after a report from Holyrood’s Culture Committee highlighted ‘serious deficiencies’ with the official consultation. Read more here.
  • Transgender problems hit the press: The Times has reported on 50 people coming forward to express regret about their gender transition. Read more here. Four young women who previously lived as men have now set up a group to help others understand the dangers of transgenderism. Also this week, the Prison Service has announced that transgender inmates will no longer be transferred to the prison corresponding to their ‘new’ gender. Read more here.

  • Scottish ‘bigot’ posters will not be re-used: After a number of MSPs spoke out on behalf of their constituents, the Government has chosen to axe the controversial posters which imply strongly that traditional Christian belief amounts to ‘hate’. Read more here and here.
  • What does Sheikh al-Tayeb really believe? The Grand Imam who co-signed, alongside the Pope, the controversial ‘Document on Human Fraternity’ calling for respect of different faiths and condemning violence done in the name of God, may actually believe quite the opposite. Read more here.

World Scene

  • Focus on the Family starts NYC pro-life campaign: The 12-week campaign, in response to New York’s recent legalisation of abortion up to birth, will culminate with a big event in Times Square on 4 May and will be the largest pro-life effort in the organisation’s history. Read more here.
  • Pro-life group targets ‘abortion-determined’ women, saves lives: US pro-life charity Human Coalition has saved 5,500 children since 2010 by reaching out online to women intent on having an abortion. Read more here.

Israel & Middle East

  • Warsaw summit on Middle East stability: The two-day meeting earlier this week was the first time in decades that an Israeli leader has met with so many senior Arab officials. But the US’s goal to rally the world against Iran may not be achieved: read more here.
  • Iran celebrates 40 years since Islamic Revolution: The anniversary was accompanied by carnivalesque celebrations in Tehran, attempted flag-burning and chants of ‘Death to Theresa May’. Read more here. Read the Gatestone Institute’s assessment of the last 40 years here.
  • Hezbollah makes political gains: With Hezbollah or pro-Hezbollah ministers making up at least 18 of Lebanon’s new 30-strong cabinet, and commanding a majority in Parliament, the terror group seems to be gradually taking over the country’s political system. Read more here.
