Robbie Burns’ poem ‘To a Mouse, on turning her up in her nest with the plough’, published in November 1785, contains the famous phrase; “The best-laid schemes of mice and men go oft awry”.
Contrasting nations
We could all be forgiven for thinking that there was a certain inevitability about the direction of travel for this nation and indeed much of the western world.
The ever-increasing tyranny of national governments, the marginalisation and indeed at times persecution of those who share our Christian faith seemed to herald a dystopian future. The policing of thought, the assault on freedom of speech and public expression of our Judeo-Christian faith brought a new and quite frightening aspect to life in modern multicultural Britain where the indigenous population has begun to feel like oppressed second class citizens in the land of their birth.

Then, on January 20th, President Trump took back the reins of power in the U.S.A. Like him or loath him, in just two weeks he declared war on wokery, confirmed government policy that there are only two sexes, and repeated his claim that climate change is a “hoax” while pushing an extreme ‘Make America Great Again’ agenda, in the process lowering energy costs for working families and beginning a radical reform of the Federal Government.
53rd State
Writing in The Conservative Woman, the amusing John Ellwood wrote this week asking President Trump if he would allow the U.K. to become the U.S.A.’s 53rd State! Lamenting the current state of Britain, he accepted that Trump has bigger priorities like Canada and Greenland, but suggested U.S. military facilities in the U.K. could probably take control here over a Saturday afternoon during the football season:
“Once in control my expectation would be that you would take urgent action to deal with our immigration crisis, reduce our taxes, slash the number of public sector employees, end the nonsense of Net Zero and sack anybody involved in the ‘diversity’ industry. Perhaps you will also have room in Guantanamo for those who have shredded the social contract and flung it down the toilet (or ‘the john’ as you would say). I am happy to provide you with a list of those who deserve incarceration.”
We in Britain will feel the aftershocks of this political earthquake and many Christians have felt a lift in their spirit in this New Year.
We have lost a lot in Britain in recent years, but thankfully not our wonderful sense of humour! Whatever our political views may be, it is patently obvious that something quite seismic has happened in America, and those involved seem to have given the glory to God. We in Britain will feel the aftershocks of this political earthquake and many Christians have felt a lift in their spirit in this New Year.
Friend of Israel
Trump’s appointment has dealt a body blow to the globalists and the repercussions will be felt by the W.E.F., the W.H.O., N.A.T.O., and every national government. President Trump is supportive of Israel and the Jewish people. Indeed, his daughter Ivanka converted to Judaism when she married New York businessman Jared Kushner. At the time Trump commented; “That’s great. Most people think I’m Jewish anyway. Most of my friends are Jewish. I have all these awards from the synagogues. They love me in Israel.”
Both Ivanka and her husband have been close advisers to the President. His latest statement that the U.S. will ‘take over’ the Gaza Strip in a shock announcement during Israeli P.M. Netanyahu’s visit to Washington this week has been met with derision internationally. Trump is an accomplished businessman and tactician so, however outrageous his announcement may be, there is probably much more to this than meets the eye. It seems that 2025 will be a truly roller-coaster year.

“From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us”. Acts 17 v 26-27
Issachar People
Closer to home, I’m delighted to report that as Issachar Ministries, Prophecy Today, and New Beginnings Discipleship join together as one Issachar People, we’ve been working very hard to complete a brand-new website which will provide a whole range of fresh resources for Bible-believing Christians, many of which will be free.
Thank you to everyone involved in this important joint endeavour. It is an essential step for the ministry as we continue to help others prepare for the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead. Our launch is just a matter of weeks away and we are grateful for your support of us in prayer as we complete this project.
Nick Szkiler is the chair of Issachar Ministries.
